While Rome itself does not have a cruise port, its official port, Civitavecchia, serves as the main maritime gateway to the Eternal City. Located approximately 50 miles northwest of Rome, Civitavecchia is a major hub for both cruise ships and ferries. The port town has a history dating back to the Emperor Trajan and offers a blend of ancient fortifications and modern amenities. A day trip from Civitavecchia to Rome is a whirlwind journey through two millennia of history. This experience is a testament to the city's enduring legacy as a center of art, culture, and power, making it a highlight of any Mediterranean cruise itinerary.
Step back in time to the height of the Roman Empire by visiting the Colosseum, the largest ancient amphitheater ever built. Afterward, walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum, the heart of ancient Rome's public life, to see temples, basilicas, and monuments that tell the story of a lost world.
Tip: To save time and avoid long queues, it is highly recommended to book your tickets for the Colosseum and Forum online in advance.
Cross into the independent city-state of Vatican City, the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church. Marvel at the awe-inspiring art within the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, then stand in wonder at the scale of St. Peter's Basilica, one of the largest churches in the world.
Tip: Dress code is strictly enforced for the Basilica and museums—shoulders and knees must be covered for both men and women.
A visit to Rome wouldn't be complete without a stop at the magnificent Trevi Fountain. Admire the Baroque masterpiece and join the tradition of throwing a coin over your shoulder into the water—a legend that promises your return to Rome.
Tip: The fountain is extremely popular and can get very crowded. For a less chaotic experience, try to visit early in the morning or late in the evening.
Discover one of ancient Rome's best-preserved buildings, the Pantheon. This former Roman temple, now a church, is an architectural marvel known for its massive dome and central oculus, which remains open to the sky, a fascinating engineering feat for its time.
Tip: Admission to the Pantheon is now often free but may require a timed-entry reservation, so check ahead of time.
Soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Piazza Navona, a beautiful Baroque square built on the site of an ancient Roman stadium. The piazza is famous for its three fountains, most notably Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers, and is a hub for street artists and local life.
Tip: Take time to enjoy a classic Italian gelato or coffee at one of the many cafes surrounding the piazza while you people-watch.
Climb the iconic Spanish Steps to enjoy views of the city from the top. Connecting the Piazza di Spagna with the Trinità dei Monti church, this famous monumental staircase is a popular meeting spot and a quintessential Roman landmark.
Tip: While you can no longer sit on the steps, they are a beautiful sight for a photo and offer a great starting point for exploring the surrounding high-end shopping district.
