Overview
Redwood National Park, located along the rugged northern coast of California, is not a cruise port but a legendary inland destination and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is where you'll find the tallest trees on Earth, the ancient coast redwoods, which soar to incredible heights and create a cathedral-like atmosphere that is both humbling and awe-inspiring. The park is a partnership of a National Park and several State Parks, preserving a spectacular ecosystem of old-growth forests, wild rivers, and dramatic coastlines.
A visit to the Redwoods is a journey into a primeval world. The experience is one of quiet reflection and immense scale, where you can walk amongst trees that have stood for millennia. Beyond the towering giants, the park offers stunning scenic drives, opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing, and a chance to immerse yourself in one of the planet's most unique and important ecosystems. It is a bucket-list destination for anyone who cherishes nature and is prepared to travel by land to witness its grandeur.
Experience the heart of the redwoods by driving the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, a 10-mile alternative to Highway 101. This route takes you through a majestic old-growth redwood forest, offering incredible views without leaving your car. Stop at various trailheads along the way for a closer look.
Tip: This road is the best scenic drive for larger vehicles like RVs and motorhomes, making it a convenient way to see the giants up close.
Step into a prehistoric world by visiting Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. This spectacular canyon is known for its 30-foot walls covered in a lush tapestry of ferns. You'll walk along a creek bed, surrounded by a living green wall.
Tip: Wear waterproof shoes or sandals, as you'll be walking in the creek. Reservations are required to visit Fern Canyon and Gold Bluffs Beach from May 15th to September 15th, so book well in advance.
While not technically in the national park, the nearby Avenue of the Giants is a must-do. This 31-mile scenic byway runs parallel to Highway 101 and takes you through some of the most beautiful and easily accessible groves of giant redwoods.
Tip: Look for pull-offs and trailheads to get out and walk among the trees. There are also unique attractions along the way, like the "Drive-Thru Tree."
Redwood National and State Parks also protect a pristine coastline. Take a hike on a coastal trail, such as the Coastal Trail near the mouth of the Klamath River, for a combination of stunning oceanfront cliffs and hidden beaches.
Tip: Check local tide charts before you go, as some beaches and tide pools are only accessible at low tide.
Keep an eye out for wildlife, especially the majestic Roosevelt elk, the largest species of elk in North America. They are often seen grazing in the meadows along the coast, particularly in the Gold Bluffs Beach area and near the town of Orick.
Tip: Maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife, especially the elk, and never attempt to feed them.
Stop by one of the park's visitor centers for valuable information, maps, and exhibits. The Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center, located on the southern end of the park, is a great starting point for first-time visitors, offering a comprehensive overview of the park's ecology and history.
Tip: Visitor centers can provide up-to-date information on trail closures, road conditions, and ranger-led programs, which can enhance your visit.
