Recife is a bustling coastal city in northeastern Brazil.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Recife, the vibrant capital of Brazil's Pernambuco state, is often nicknamed the "Venice of Brazil" due to its intricate network of rivers, canals, and over 50 bridges connecting its various islands and peninsulas. This historic port city offers a captivating blend of colonial charm, modern urbanity, and a rich Afro-Brazilian culture. Founded in the 16th century, Recife's deep historical roots are visible in its well-preserved architecture, grand plazas, and numerous churches, while its lively spirit is felt in its bustling markets, vibrant arts scene, and famous beaches.
A cruise to Recife docks right in the heart of Recife Antigo (Old Recife), providing immediate access to the city's historic core. Beyond the city's captivating urban landscape, a short journey can lead to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Olinda, a picturesque colonial town on a hilltop, or to some of Brazil's most stunning tropical beaches. Recife promises a diverse and enriching experience, blending architectural beauty, cultural immersion, and warm Brazilian hospitality.
Begin your exploration at Recife Antigo, the historic heart of the city, located right at the cruise port. Stroll through its cobbled streets, admire the colorful colonial architecture, and visit Marco Zero Square (Praça do Marco Zero), the symbolic starting point of the city and a bustling hub with art installations and waterfront views.
Tip: Don't miss Rua do Bom Jesus, once named the 3rd most beautiful street in the world, known for its historic buildings, art galleries, and the first synagogue in the Americas (Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue).
Journey to the magnificent Instituto Ricardo Brennand, a truly unique cultural complex housed in a medieval-style castle. This world-class institution boasts one of the largest private collections of armory in the world, a vast array of historical artifacts, fine art (including works by Frans Post depicting Dutch Brazil), and beautifully manicured gardens.
Tip: Allow ample time for this visit (at least 2-3 hours), as the collection is extensive. It's a short taxi ride from the city center.
Take a short drive (approx. 15-20 minutes) to Olinda, a charming colonial town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hilltop overlooking Recife, Olinda is famous for its colorful houses, baroque churches, art studios, and stunning panoramic views. Wander its narrow, winding streets and soak in the bohemian atmosphere.
Tip: The best views are from Alto da Sé, where you can also find local artisans selling crafts. Wear comfortable shoes as Olinda involves walking up and down steep, cobbled hills.
Head to Boa Viagem Beach, Recife's most famous urban beach, known for its long stretch of white sand, natural reef pools (formed at low tide), and vibrant atmosphere. Enjoy sunbathing, a refreshing swim in the calm, protected pools, or sample local snacks from beachside vendors.
Tip: Due to occasional shark sightings outside the reef, it is highly recommended to only swim within the natural pools formed by the reef at low tide.
Visit the Casa da Cultura (House of Culture), a former 19th-century prison beautifully transformed into a vibrant center for regional culture and crafts. Explore its unique layout, where former cells now house individual shops selling local handicrafts, textiles, lace, ceramics, and artwork from Pernambuco.
Tip: This is an excellent place to find authentic souvenirs and observe local artisans at work. The architecture itself is fascinating.
Experience Recife from a unique perspective by taking a catamaran tour on the Capibaribe River. These tours offer a charming journey through the city's waterways, providing views of its numerous bridges, historic buildings, and modern skyline, showcasing why Recife earned its "Venice of Brazil" moniker.
Tip: Look for tours departing from near Marco Zero. It's a relaxing way to see many of Recife's landmarks without extensive walking.
