Take a short drive (approx. 15-20 minutes) to Olinda, a charming colonial town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Perched on a hilltop overlooking Recife, Olinda is famous for its colorful houses, baroque churches, art studios, and stunning panoramic views. Wander its narrow, winding streets and soak in the bohemian atmosphere.
Tip: The best views are from Alto da Sé, where you can also find local artisans selling crafts. Wear comfortable shoes as Olinda involves walking up and down steep, cobbled hills.
Head to Boa Viagem Beach, Recife's most famous urban beach, known for its long stretch of white sand, natural reef pools (formed at low tide), and vibrant atmosphere. Enjoy sunbathing, a refreshing swim in the calm, protected pools, or sample local snacks from beachside vendors.
Tip: Due to occasional shark sightings outside the reef, it is highly recommended to only swim within the natural pools formed by the reef at low tide.
Visit the Casa da Cultura (House of Culture), a former 19th-century prison beautifully transformed into a vibrant center for regional culture and crafts. Explore its unique layout, where former cells now house individual shops selling local handicrafts, textiles, lace, ceramics, and artwork from Pernambuco.
Tip: This is an excellent place to find authentic souvenirs and observe local artisans at work. The architecture itself is fascinating.
Experience Recife from a unique perspective by taking a catamaran tour on the Capibaribe River.
