Overview
Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland's only inhabited offshore island, is a secluded and captivating cruise port located just six miles off the coast of Ballycastle. Shaped by a dramatic history and wild, rugged landscapes, Rathlin is a true sanctuary of natural grandeur. Its impressive cliffs, serene harbors, and sweeping grasslands create a peaceful retreat, far from the hustle of mainland life.
The island is internationally recognized as a major seabird sanctuary, hosting immense colonies of nesting puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, and guillemots. It is also home to three historic lighthouses, including the unique "upside-down" lighthouse at the West Light. A visit to Rathlin is a profound experience for nature lovers, history buffs, and anyone seeking a rare glimpse into a tranquil island community that feels a world away.
The top attraction on the island is the RSPB Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre. Located at the western tip of the island, this is where you can witness huge colonies of nesting seabirds. Walk down the 98 steps to a viewing platform to see puffins (especially from April to July), razorbills, and guillemots up close on the cliffside. The lighthouse itself is an engineering marvel, as its light is at the base of the structure, built into the cliff face.
Tip: The walk to the Seabird Centre is about 4 miles from the harbor. In season, a "Puffin Bus" meets the ferry and provides a return trip for a small cash fee, which is a great option.
Rathlin offers several walking trails with stunning views of the sea cliffs, rocky coastline, and springtime fields bursting with wildflowers. The trails range from easy walks to more challenging routes, providing a perfect way to explore the island's raw beauty at your own pace.
Tip: Start with the walk from the harbor to Mill Bay, where you can often spot the resident seal colony lounging on the rocks.
The main hub of the island is Church Bay, where your tender will land. Here you'll find the only pub, a small shop, and the Boathouse Visitor Centre. The center provides a wealth of information on the island's history, from its role as a pirate port to its Viking past, and showcases artifacts from the many shipwrecks that dot its coastline.
Tip: Take a moment to relax at McCuaig's Bar, the island's only pub, for a refreshing pint and a chat with friendly locals.
While the birds are the main draw, Rathlin is also home to other fascinating wildlife. Keep an eye out for curious seals in Mill Bay, as well as the unique Irish hare that lives on the island. The waters surrounding Rathlin are also a popular spot for divers, with over 90 shipwrecks, including the HMS Drake, a British battleship torpedoed in 1917.
Tip: For an even closer look at the marine life, some local boat tour operators offer wildlife cruises around the island from the harbor.
Rathlin has three historic lighthouses, each with a unique story: the West Lighthouse (the "upside-down" one), the East Lighthouse (built into the cliff face), and the Rue Point Lighthouse. A walk or a bus tour can get you to a viewpoint where you can see all three in one go.
Tip: If you have a limited time, a bus tour is the most efficient way to see the lighthouses and the Seabird Centre.
Visit the small shops and studios in Church Bay to find locally made gifts and crafts. You can find unique souvenirs, from hand-knitted items to paintings by local artists, which directly support the small community of around 150 residents.
Tip: The Breakwater Studio features the work of local artist Yvonne Braithwaite, whose subject matter is the stunning land and seascapes of the island.
