Punta Suarez is one of the most popular visitor sites in the Galápagos.

Overview
Punta Suárez, located on Española Island (also known as Hood Island), is widely considered one of the premier wildlife viewing sites in the Galápagos archipelago. As the oldest island, Española boasts a unique and highly evolved ecosystem, making it a critical habitat for several endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Punta Suárez is a dry landing point, leading to a rocky, windswept landscape of dramatic cliffs and pristine coastline.
This site is most famous for being the exclusive breeding ground for nearly the entire global population of Waved Albatrosses from April to December. Beyond the magnificent albatrosses, visitors are treated to close encounters with vibrant Nazca Boobies, Blue-footed Boobies, Galápagos Hawks, and the colorful Marine Iguanas, which here display a distinct red coloration during breeding season. A visit to Punta Suárez is an unforgettable immersion into the raw, powerful forces of evolution and the astounding diversity of Galápagos wildlife.
From April to December, Punta Suárez is the exclusive breeding ground for the Waved Albatross. Witness these magnificent birds perform their elaborate courtship rituals, including the famous "bill-fencing" dance, and observe their chicks. This is arguably the highlight of any Galápagos trip during these months.
Tip: Respect the nesting areas and stay on designated paths. Give them space to perform their rituals without disturbance.
Punta Suárez is an excellent location to observe both Blue-footed Boobies (known for their distinctive blue feet and comical courtship dance) and Nazca Boobies (the largest booby species in the Galápagos) nesting along the cliff edges and inland.
Tip: Look for Blue-footed Boobies displaying their feet during courtship. Your naturalist guide will help you spot nesting sites.
Observe the vibrant Galápagos Marine Iguanas basking on the black lava rocks. Unique to Española, these iguanas display a striking red coloration during the breeding season (especially from December to March), making them even more visually spectacular.
Tip: Their camouflage can be excellent; watch your step on the trails, and notice their unique ability to "sneeze" excess salt.
Walk along the trail to the impressive blowhole, a natural geological formation where water is forced through a fissure in the cliff, creating a spectacular geyser-like spout that can reach heights of 50 to 75 feet, especially during high tide with strong surf.
Tip: Maintain a safe distance and be prepared for strong winds and sea spray. The sound and power are impressive.
Keep an eye out for different species of Darwin's Finches, particularly the Española Mockingbird, which is known to be quite bold and curious. You also have a good chance of seeing the powerful Galápagos Hawk, the archipelago's top avian predator.
Tip: Listen to your naturalist guide explain how the finches on Española demonstrate the theory of evolution through their beak variations.
Beyond the wildlife, the landscape itself is stunning. Walk along the rocky coastline and admire the dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. The remote, wild beauty of Española is palpable here.
Tip: The walk can be uneven; wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip. The strong winds can also be exhilarating.
