A quirky and historical stop on Floreana Island.

Overview
Post Office Bay, located on the northern coast of Floreana Island in the Galápagos archipelago, is less about a traditional "port" and more about a unique, historical landing site known for its extraordinary postal system. This unassuming cove became famous in the late 18th century when British whalers placed a wooden barrel here to serve as an informal mailbox. Sailors, far from home for years, would leave unstamped letters in the barrel, hoping that passing ships heading in the direction of the letter's destination would pick it up and hand-deliver it.
This fascinating tradition, rooted in human ingenuity and the kindness of strangers, continues to this day. Visitors to Post Office Bay are encouraged to drop off their own postcards (without stamps!) and sift through the existing mail, taking any letters they can hand-deliver near their home. Beyond this unique human history, Floreana Island offers glimpses of diverse wildlife, interesting geological formations like lava tubes, and a rich, sometimes mysterious, human settlement history. A visit here is a tangible link to the Galápagos' past, providing a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
Engage in the centuries-old ritual at the iconic Post Office barrel. Drop your own unstamped postcard (with a clear address!) into the barrel, and then sift through the existing mail to find a letter or postcard addressed to someone living near your home or next travel destination, committing to hand-deliver it.
Tip: Bring a few pre-addressed postcards or letters with you. This is the main highlight and a truly unique interaction with Galápagos history.
Just a short walk inland from Post Office Bay, you can explore a lava tube, a natural cave formed by ancient volcanic activity. These impressive underground formations offer a glimpse into the island's geological past and are fun to navigate.
Tip: Bring a flashlight (or use your phone's light) as parts of the lava tube can be dark. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground can be uneven.
The waters around Post Office Bay are clear and inviting. Depending on your itinerary and guide, you may have the opportunity for snorkeling or swimming in the bay. Keep an eye out for green sea turtles, rays, and playful Galápagos sea lions in the water.
Tip: Even if you don't snorkel, observe the water for marine life from the dinghy or the shore.
While not as teeming with unique land species as some other Galápagos sites, Post Office Bay and its immediate surroundings still offer chances to observe wildlife. Look for Galápagos sea lions lounging on the beach, various species of Darwin's finches, and colorful lava lizards on land.
Tip: Keep a respectful distance from all wildlife. Your naturalist guide will point out interesting species.
Many visits to Post Office Bay include a dinghy (Zodiac) ride along the nearby mangroves and coastal coves. These rides offer a different perspective of the coastline and can bring you closer to marine life, including sharks and rays in the shallow waters, and various bird species.
Tip: This is an excellent opportunity for photography, so have your camera ready.
Post Office Bay is a site steeped in human history, from early whalers and pirates to more recent, intriguing settlers. Ask your naturalist guide about the fascinating and often mysterious history of Floreana Island, including the infamous "Galápagos Affair" of the 1930s, a tale of love, intrigue, and disappearances.
Tip: While the bay itself doesn't have direct remnants of these stories, understanding the human drama that unfolded on Floreana adds a compelling layer to your visit.
