Overview

Tip: The church is a short, scenic walk from the tender pier. Walk around its exterior for the best photo opportunities of its unique black and white striped facade against the blue sea.
Ascend to the imposing Doria Castle (Castello Doria), a medieval fortress that dominates the village from above. Built by the Genoese in the 12th-14th centuries, the castle offers a fascinating glimpse into military history and provides panoramic vistas of the Gulf of Poets and the vibrant town below.
Tip: The walk up to the castle is steep but rewarding. There's often a small entrance fee to explore the castle grounds and walls.
Located just below the Church of St. Peter, Lord Byron's Grotto (Grotta di Byron) is a dramatic sea cave named after the English Romantic poet Lord Byron, who is said to have drawn inspiration here and swam across the gulf. The grotto offers a unique natural wonder and a tranquil spot to admire the sea.
Tip: The grotto is easily accessible from the path leading to St. Peter's Church. It's a great spot for photos and to simply enjoy the sound of the waves.
Lose yourself in the charm of Portovenere's medieval village (Borgo Antico). Enter through the ancient city gate (Porta del Borgo) and explore the labyrinthine alleys (carruggi), narrow streets, and tiny passages. Discover local artisan shops, quaint eateries, and colorful tower-houses (the Palazzata a Mare) that form a protective wall along the waterfront.
Tip: The main street, Via Capellini, can be busy, but venture into the side alleys for a more authentic and quieter experience.
Embark on a boat tour to the nearby islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto. These three islands, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site, offer unique natural beauty, sea caves, and pristine swimming spots. Palmaria, the largest, has hiking trails and a few beaches.
