Overview
Poros, a small island in the Saronic Gulf, is a true gem of the Aegean Sea, separated from the mainland Peloponnese by a narrow, tranquil strait. Its picturesque main town, Poros Town, is built amphitheatrically on a hillside, with charming neoclassical buildings in pastel hues that ascend to a historic clock tower. Poros is known for its lush pine and lemon forests that reach down to the sea, giving it a unique, verdant landscape and a distinctly romantic feel.
Often referred to as the "Venice of the Saronic Gulf," Poros offers a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere, contrasting with the more bustling Greek islands. A visit here is a delightful journey of simple pleasures, from exploring its narrow, bougainvillea-covered alleys and waterfront cafes to discovering ancient ruins and serene beaches. Its proximity to Athens makes it a convenient and enchanting stop for a taste of authentic Greek island life.
The most recognizable landmark in Poros, the Clock Tower, sits atop the highest point of the town. The climb to the top is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the town, the harbor, and the opposite coast of Galatas on the mainland. It's a perfect spot for photography, especially during sunset.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes for the walk, as the path involves a series of steps and cobbled alleys. The views are well worth the effort.
The waterfront of Poros Town is the heart of the island's activity. Take a leisurely stroll along the harbor, where you can admire fishing boats, yachts, and the neoclassical buildings reflecting in the calm waters. This area is lined with cafes, tavernas, and shops.
Tip: Stop for a coffee or a glass of wine at one of the waterfront cafes and simply enjoy the serene atmosphere and the passing boats.
On the western side of the island, a short distance from the main town, you can find the ruins of the Russian Naval Base. This historically significant site from the 19th century is now a protected monument. It's a peaceful spot with clear waters that's also popular for swimming.
Tip: You can reach the Russian Naval Base by a short taxi ride or by renting a scooter, which is a popular way to explore the outer parts of the island.
Venture away from the main harbor to explore the narrow, winding alleyways of Poros Town. These streets are filled with traditional whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea, small artisan shops, and hidden squares, offering an authentic glimpse into local life.
Tip: Look for shops selling locally made olive oil, honey, and handmade crafts for unique souvenirs.
Poros is known for its green landscape, and its beaches are no exception. Take a short taxi or water taxi to one of the nearby beaches, such as Askeli or Monastiri, to swim in the clear waters and relax on sands bordered by fragrant pine trees.
Tip: Many of these beaches have beach bars and restaurants, so you can easily spend a few hours relaxing with all the amenities you need.
Perched on a hillside in a pine forest, the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery dates back to the 18th century. It is an impressive and serene site with an important history, offering a peaceful retreat and a beautiful view.
Tip: Dress respectfully when visiting the monastery (shoulders and knees covered). The monastery is easily accessible by taxi.
