Overview
Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is an ancient city of immense beauty and historical significance. Originally established by the Nabataean people around 300 B.C., this extraordinary city is famous for its rock-cut architecture, where tombs and temples are intricately carved directly into the rose-red sandstone cliffs. Often called the "Rose City" because of the color of the stone, Petra was an important crossroads for ancient trade routes and a masterpiece of Eastern traditions blended with Hellenistic architecture.
The journey to Petra for cruise passengers begins in the modern port city of Aqaba. A two-hour drive north from Aqaba takes you through the beautiful desert landscape of Jordan to this spectacular site. Upon arrival, a walk through the Siq, a narrow, winding canyon, builds anticipation until you are finally greeted by the awe-inspiring sight of Al-Khazneh, or "The Treasury." Exploring Petra is a journey through a living, breathing history book, offering a profound sense of wonder and adventure.
The most iconic experience of Petra is the approach to the Treasury. Your journey begins with a walk or horse-drawn carriage ride through the Siq, a breathtaking narrow gorge that is the ancient main entrance to the city. The towering rock walls create a sense of mystery before they dramatically open to reveal the magnificent facade of Al-Khazneh.
Tip: The walk through the Siq is about 30 minutes each way. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes as the path is uneven.
For a more strenuous but incredibly rewarding experience, hike the approximately 800 steps up to the Monastery. This vast and imposing monument is even larger than the Treasury and offers a serene and stunning view of the surrounding valleys from the top.
Tip: Start this hike early in the day to avoid the worst of the heat. It is a demanding climb, so bring plenty of water.
As you proceed along the main trail past the Treasury, you will encounter the Royal Tombs, a series of grand, intricately carved burial places in the rock face. Highlights include the Urn Tomb and the Silk Tomb, which show off the Nabataeans' architectural prowess.
Tip: Take the time to examine the colors of the sandstone in the rock, which can vary from yellow to red and purple.
For those interested in the details of the site's history and archaeology, a visit to the Petra Museum is a great option. It currently offers a good collection of artifacts found during excavations and provides context for the city's rise, fall, and rediscovery.
Tip: The museum is near the main entrance to the site, making it a good place to start or finish your day.
For incredible views and a deeper understanding of Nabataean religious practices, consider the hike to the High Place of Sacrifice. This ancient ceremonial site sits atop a mountain overlooking the city and offers a unique perspective of Petra's vastness.
Tip: This hike is another strenuous option, but the sweeping views from the top are well worth the effort.
Often combined with a Petra tour, a visit to Wadi Rum is an excellent way to experience Jordan's desert landscape. Nicknamed the "Valley of the Moon," this stunning desert is known for its dramatic rock formations and "Mars-like" scenery, and can be explored via jeep or camel ride.
Tip: Check if your shore excursion combines Petra and Wadi Rum, as this allows you to see two of Jordan's most famous sites in one day.
