Overview
Patmos is a small, enchanting Greek island in the Aegean Sea, renowned for its profound spiritual significance and breathtaking beauty. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the sacred place where St. John the Evangelist is said to have received his visions and written the Book of Revelation. The most important landmark on the island is the fortress-like Monastery of Saint John the Theologian. Built in the 11th century, it commands a spectacular view from the top of the hill. You can explore its beautiful chapels, admire the priceless icons and relics in its museum, and take in the magnificent panoramic views of the island.
Tip: To enter the monastery, women should have their shoulders and knees covered, so be sure to dress appropriately.
Just below the Monastery lies the Cave of the Apocalypse, where St. John is believed to have lived in exile and received his visions. This sacred site is a place of deep spiritual importance. Visitors can see the indentations in the rock where he is said to have rested his head and grasped for support.
Tip: The cave is a short taxi ride or a good walk from the port of Skala.
The island's capital, Chora, is a stunning medieval village with narrow, winding alleys, beautiful whitewashed houses, and charming squares. It's built in a circular fashion around the monastery, and wandering its streets offers incredible views and a chance to discover small shops and cafes.
Tip: The best way to explore Chora is on foot, allowing you to get lost and find hidden treasures.
Skala is the main port and the bustling heart of the island. Its waterfront is lined with cafes, tavernas, and shops, offering a lively atmosphere. It's a great place to start your day, grab a Greek coffee, and watch the local boats and ferries.
Tip: The small alleys and streets just behind the main promenade are great for finding unique souvenirs.
Patmos has several beautiful beaches for those who want a break from sightseeing. Grikos Beach, with its calm waters and seafront restaurants, is a popular choice, while Lambi Beach is famous for its colorful pebbles.
Tip: Local buses and taxis can easily take you to the island's main beaches.
In addition to the monastery's museum, you can learn about the island's history at other sites. Exploring the Folklore Museum in Chora or the Patmian Ecclesiastical School offers a deeper look into the island's past, from its Byzantine heritage to its rich spiritual traditions.
