The main port town of Parikia is a treasure to explore. Its heart is the Old Town, or Kastro, a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and bougainvillea-draped archways. You can find small boutiques, cafes, and historic sites like the ruins of a Venetian castle.
Tip: The Old Town is a perfect place to get lost and discover charming hidden corners.
Located just a short walk from the port, the Church of 100 Doors is one of Greece's most significant Byzantine monuments. Dating back to the 4th century, this impressive religious complex is a beautiful example of early Christian architecture and a site of great spiritual importance.
Tip: This is a must-see landmark with a fascinating history; a short guided tour is highly recommended.
A short bus or taxi ride from Parikia, Naoussa is a former fishing village that has become one of the most charming spots on the island. Its small, circular harbor is lined with lively restaurants, cafes, and bars, and its narrow streets are perfect for exploring chic boutiques and art galleries.
Tip: The local bus system on Paros is excellent and very affordable for a trip to Naoussa.
Paros is famous for its beaches. Kolymbithres, with its smooth, moon-like rock formations, offers a unique sunbathing experience, while Golden Beach (Chryssi Akti) is known for its long stretch of golden sand and is a hub for windsurfing.
Tip: Buses from Parikia can take you to many of the island's best beaches.
For a taste of traditional Greek island life away from the coast, take a trip to Lefkes. This beautiful village is nestled in the mountains, offering stunning views of the island and the sea. Its peaceful, car-free streets, traditional architecture, and small tavernas are a delight to explore.
Tip: The Byzantine Road, an ancient path connecting Lefkes to Prodromos, is a beautiful and easy hike.
Paros was historically famous for its translucent marble, which was used to create some of the world's greatest sculptures, including the Venus de Milo. You can visit the ancient marble quarries near the village of Marathi to see where this precious material was extracted.
Tip: This excursion is best done with a taxi or a pre-arranged tour as the site is inland.
