Overview
Paranaguá is a significant port city in the state of Paraná, Brazil, known primarily for its bustling commercial port, one of the busiest in South America. While the port area is focused on logistics and trade, the city itself is the oldest in the state, rich with colonial history and serving as the ideal gateway to the breathtaking natural and cultural wonders of the region.
A cruise stop in Paranaguá offers access to some of southern Brazil's most beautiful and authentic experiences. It is a launching point for a scenic train journey through the lush Atlantic Forest to the modern, clean city of Curitiba and a short boat trip to the pristine, car-free island of Ilha do Mel. The port's strategic location makes it an unexpected but rewarding destination for those looking to explore a side of Brazil beyond its more famous coastal cities.

The most famous excursion from Paranaguá is the Serra Verde Express, a historic train that travels to the inland city of Curitiba. The scenic 3-hour journey is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, passing through the stunning Atlantic Forest, over dramatic bridges, and through numerous tunnels.
Tip: Booking this excursion through your cruise line is recommended to ensure seamless transportation and timing.

Once in Curitiba, you'll find one of Brazil's greenest and most well-planned cities. Highlights include the magnificent Botanical Garden, with its iconic glasshouse; the unique design of the Oscar Niemeyer Museum; and the charming, historic center of Largo da Ordem.
Tip: The city has an excellent public transport system, but many cruise excursions will include a guided bus tour of the main sites.

Just a short boat ride from the Paranaguá area is Ilha do Mel (Honey Island), a car-free, environmentally protected island with beautiful beaches and laid-back villages. You can hike to the historic lighthouse (Farol das Conchas), explore the old fortress, or simply relax on the pristine beaches.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as getting around the island is done entirely on foot.

The port city of Paranaguá itself has a small but charming historic center. You can walk along cobblestone streets and see well-preserved colonial buildings and historic churches, such as the Church of São Benedito. The area around the pier offers a glimpse into the city's rich past as a colonial port.
Tip: Be sure to visit the local market to see a variety of fresh seafood and local produce.

Located on the outskirts of Paranaguá, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Rocio is a major religious pilgrimage site and a beautiful example of neo-Gothic architecture. It is dedicated to the patron saint of Paraná state and offers a peaceful and spiritual experience.
Tip: A taxi is the easiest way to get to the sanctuary from the main port area.

Paranaguá is a great place to try traditional seafood and the region's famous dish, barreado. This hearty meat stew, slow-cooked in a clay pot for up to 24 hours, is a delicious and authentic taste of Paraná. You can find it at many local restaurants in both Paranaguá and Curitiba.
Tip: Ask a local for their recommendation on the best restaurant to try the barreado.
