Overview
Paracas Bay is a vital cruise port located on the southern coast of Peru, serving as the gateway to some of the country's most spectacular natural and historical sites. The bay itself is a breathtaking sight, where the arid, red desert landscape of the Paracas National Reserve dramatically meets the Pacific Ocean. The most popular activity in Paracas is a boat tour to the Ballestas Islands, often referred to as the "Peruvian Galapagos." These rocky islands are home to a massive population of sea lions, penguins, and thousands of seabirds, including pelicans and boobies. On the way, the boat will pass the mysterious Candelabro, a massive geoglyph carved into the sand of a hillside.
Tip: Tours are best taken in the morning when the sea is calm, and the wildlife is most active.
For a truly unforgettable experience, take a flight from the Pisco airport (a short drive from Paracas) to see the ancient Nazca Lines. These giant geoglyphs, etched into the desert floor by the Nazca culture, depict animals, plants, and geometric shapes, visible only from the air.
Tip: The flights are in small planes, so if you are prone to motion sickness, consider taking preventative medication.
A tour of the Paracas National Reserve reveals a landscape of stunning, colorful desert cliffs, unique rock formations, and beautiful, secluded beaches. The dramatic scenery, including the famous Playa Roja (Red Beach) with its striking reddish sand, provides a captivating contrast to the deep blue sea.
Tip: Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as the desert sun is very strong.
Located within the Paracas National Reserve, the Julio C. Tello Site Museum houses a remarkable collection of artifacts from the pre-Inca Paracas culture. Its exhibits feature intricately woven textiles and ceramics, providing a deep insight into the skills and life of this ancient civilization.
Tip: This museum is an excellent and informative stop on any tour of the reserve.
The small, charming town of El Chaco is where the cruise ship tenders arrive. Its waterfront is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, offering a great place for a casual walk. From the main pier, you can see the local fishing boats and get a sense of the relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Tip: Most of the town's restaurants are known for their fresh seafood.
Paracas is located in the heart of Peru's main Pisco-producing region. Many shore excursions offer a visit to a local winery or distillery to learn about the history of this traditional Peruvian spirit and sample various types of Pisco, the key ingredient in a Pisco Sour.
