Overview

Meaning "Cotton Castle" in Turkish, this is a natural wonder where hot, mineral-rich thermal waters cascade down a mountainside, solidifying into brilliant white, terraced travertines. This unique geological formation, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a truly breathtaking sight.
Adjacent to the thermal terraces lies the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis, a major healing center in antiquity known for its therapeutic waters. A day trip to Pamukkale is a remarkable combination of natural beauty and historical exploration, allowing you to walk on the "cotton" terraces, wade in the warm pools, and explore the well-preserved ruins of a city that once thrived on these very waters.
The main highlight of Pamukkale is its famous white travertine terraces. You are allowed to walk barefoot on a designated path to protect the fragile calcium formations. The feeling of the warm water and the unique landscape makes for a surreal and memorable experience.
Tip: Wear shoes you can easily take off and carry, as you will be required to go barefoot on the terraces. The surface can be a little slippery and uneven in places.
Indulge in a unique swim in Cleopatra's Antique Pool, a stunning thermal pool filled with warm, clear mineral-rich water. It is a one-of-a-kind experience to swim among ancient marble columns and fallen stones from the Temple of Apollo, which fell into the pool after an earthquake.
Tip: There is an extra fee for entering this pool, and it is a very popular attraction. If you wish to swim, factor in the time and cost.
Step back in time by exploring the vast Greco-Roman ruins of Hierapolis. This ancient city, founded as a thermal spa, features a magnificent, well-preserved theater with a capacity for thousands of spectators, an extensive necropolis (cemetery), and Roman baths.
Tip: The site is expansive, so wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for a good amount of walking. A tour guide can provide invaluable context on the history of this "Holy City."
The Antique Theater of Hierapolis is one of the most impressive structures on the site. Climb to the top tier for a breathtaking view of the entire Hierapolis complex and the Pamukkale terraces below. Its intricate stone carvings and near-perfect state of preservation are a testament to Roman engineering.
Tip: This is a prime spot for photography, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is softer.
See the fascinating and mysterious Pluto's Gate (Plutonium), an ancient cave dedicated to the god of the underworld. The cave emits deadly, carbon dioxide-rich gases, which were believed by the ancients to be the breath of Pluto himself.
Tip: You can observe this natural phenomenon from a safe distance as the area is fenced off for safety.
Most excursions to Pamukkale include a stop for a traditional Turkish lunch. Take this opportunity to refuel and savor local dishes. Many restaurants offer delicious options, from fresh salads to savory kebabs and traditional desserts.
