Tip: Grab a city map or follow a walking tour to discover the different squares, palaces, and statues that give the city its unique character.
At the heart of the city stands the magnificent Cathedral of San Salvador. This impressive Gothic structure is a major pilgrimage stop on the Camino Primitivo. Within the cathedral is the Holy Chamber (Cámara Santa), a UNESCO World Heritage site that houses priceless relics, including the Sudarium of Oviedo.
Tip: Check the opening hours for the Holy Chamber, as they can differ from the rest of the cathedral.
Just outside the city center, on the slopes of Monte Naranco, are two of Oviedo's most important treasures: the pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. These stunning 9th-century buildings are exceptional examples of early medieval architecture and are both UNESCO World Heritage sites.
Tip: These churches are typically part of an organized excursion, as they require a short bus ride from the city center.
Enjoy a leisurely walk through the elegant Campo de San Francisco Park, a green oasis in the middle of the city. This beautifully maintained park is a favorite spot for locals and features ponds, a rose garden, and several notable statues.
Tip: Look for the statue of Mafalda, a popular Argentine comic strip character, a favorite spot for photos.
Experience the local culture on Gascona Street, known as "Cider Boulevard." The region's unique cider (sidra) is a must-try. Waiters pour the drink from high above their heads to oxygenate it, a practice called escanciar, a sight in itself. Pair it with local dishes like fabada asturiana (a hearty bean stew) or fresh seafood.
Tip: Don't try to pour the cider yourself! Let the experts do it for the best flavor.
For art lovers, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias is a hidden gem. Housed in two historic buildings, its collection includes works by Spanish masters such as El Greco, Goya, and Dalí, providing a comprehensive overview of Spanish and Asturian art.
