Overview
Oudong is a historic river cruise port located on the banks of the Tonle Sap River in Cambodia. As the royal capital from the 17th to the 19th centuries, the city holds immense cultural and historical significance. Today, it is primarily a peaceful and sacred site, with its main attractions centered on a prominent twin-peaked hill, Phnom Oudong, which is dotted with magnificent stupas and temples housing the ashes of past kings.

The stupas on Phnom Oudong serve as a royal necropolis, housing the remains and ashes of several former Cambodian kings. The most impressive are the stupas of King Ang Duong, King Monivong, and King Chey Chettha II, all featuring intricate designs and reflecting the rich history of the Khmer monarchy.
Tip: Many of the stupas were damaged during the Khmer Rouge era but have been beautifully restored.
Located at the foot of Phnom Oudong, the Arthaross Temple is a rebuilt structure that holds a famous Buddha statue that uniquely faces north. According to local legend, the original temple was built to protect Cambodia from a northern threat, and its ruins are a testament to the town's storied past.
Tip: The temple is a great spot to pause and appreciate the unique architecture before continuing your exploration.
At the base of the mountain is the Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Meditation Center, a tranquil monastery that serves as a spiritual hub for monks and laypeople alike. The center features beautiful architecture and serene grounds, providing a peaceful environment to learn about Buddhist practices.
Tip: Visitors are welcome to quietly observe the monks and the serene atmosphere.
The area around Oudong is known for its craftsmanship. You can take a short tuk-tuk ride to nearby villages to see local artisans working with silver, copper, and brass. Many of the shops offer beautiful handcrafted jewelry and other unique souvenirs.
Tip: Look for a chance to see the artisans at work and purchase a piece of their handmade art.
From the top of Phnom Oudong, you are treated to stunning, unobstructed views of the Cambodian countryside. The vast landscape of green rice paddies, traditional villages, and meandering waterways stretches out below, offering a perfect snapshot of rural life in the region.
