The Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata is a Romanesque masterpiece and the town's most important landmark. Its main draw is a stunning 12th-century mosaic floor that covers the entire nave, depicting the "Tree of Life" with intricate scenes from the Old Testament, mythology, and daily life. It is considered one of the largest and most significant mosaics in Europe.
Tip: Don't miss the chapel containing the skulls and bones of the 800 martyrs who were killed during the Ottoman invasion in 1480.
Overlooking the harbor, the imposing Castello Aragonese is a powerful fortress with massive towers and a moat. Built in the late 15th century, the castle is now open to the public and often hosts art exhibitions. Exploring its ramparts and interior provides a fascinating glimpse into the town's defensive past.
Tip: The castle's rooftop offers some of the best panoramic views of the city and the sea.
Otranto has a beautiful, crescent-shaped city beach with soft white sand and calm, turquoise waters. Located right next to the historic old town, it is a perfect place for a refreshing swim or simply to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is lined with cafes and a vibrant promenade.
Tip: Rent a sunbed and an umbrella for a relaxing hour or two by the sea.
For a memorable hike, follow the coastal path south from the port to Punta Palascìa Lighthouse, which marks Italy's easternmost point. The walk offers spectacular views of the rugged coastline and the meeting point of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. It's an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers.
Tip: The round trip walk is a few miles, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
If you wish to venture beyond Otranto, consider a day trip to the provincial capital, Lecce, often called the "Florence of the South." Lecce is famous for its intricate Baroque architecture, including the Basilica di Santa Croce and the Piazza del Duomo. The city is reachable by bus or a short taxi ride.
Tip: Tours to Lecce are often organized by the cruise lines and are the most efficient way to see this beautiful city in one day.
