Overview
Otavalo is a vibrant town nestled in the picturesque Andean highlands of Ecuador, celebrated as the "Intercultural Capital." The town is best known for its famous indigenous market, considered one of the largest and oldest in South America. Surrounded by the majestic Imbabura, Cotacachi, and Mojanda volcanoes, Otavalo offers a rich blend of stunning natural landscapes and deep cultural heritage.
A visit to Otavalo is an immersion into the proud traditions of the Otavalo people, an indigenous community renowned for their textile craftsmanship, music, and vibrant clothing. The town's atmosphere is a captivating mix of history and commerce, where ancient trading practices are very much alive.
The Plaza de Ponchos is the heart of the Otavalo Market, a legendary open-air market where vendors from the surrounding communities gather to sell their goods. The market is famous for its handwoven textiles, intricate jewelry, colorful paintings, and leather goods. While stalls are open every day, the market is at its busiest and most vibrant on Saturdays.
Tip: Bargaining is a common practice here, so don't be afraid to politely negotiate for a better price.
Just a short trip from Otavalo is Cuicocha, a breathtakingly beautiful crater lake located at the foot of the Cotacachi Volcano. The lake, with its two islands and deep blue water, is a spectacular sight. You can walk a scenic hiking trail around the crater rim or take a boat tour to get a different perspective.
Tip: The trail around the crater is about 14 kilometers (9 miles) long and takes around 4-5 hours to complete.
The Peguche Waterfall (Cascada de Peguche) is a beautiful 18-meter cascade located in a lush eucalyptus forest near Otavalo. The waterfall holds spiritual significance for the local indigenous community, and it is a popular place for locals and visitors to take a peaceful stroll and enjoy the natural scenery.
Tip: The waterfall is a short walk from the village of Peguche, which is famous for its skilled weavers.
Located near Otavalo, the small town of Cotacachi is famous for its high-quality leather goods. The main street is lined with dozens of shops selling everything from jackets and bags to shoes and wallets at very reasonable prices. It's an excellent stop for souvenir shopping.
Tip: You can easily reach Cotacachi by bus or a short taxi ride from Otavalo.
Otavalo's local cuisine is an authentic part of the Andean experience. The municipal market is a great place to try local dishes like fritada (fried pork), yahuarlocro (a potato soup), and empanadas. Be sure to try some of the fresh fruits and juices from the region.
Tip: If you visit on a Saturday, the local food stalls in and around the main market square are a must-try.
Beyond shopping at the market, take the opportunity to visit a local workshop to see artisans at work. The Otavalo people are also known for their traditional music. You can visit a shop where artisans make Andean instruments like panpipes and charangos.
Tip: Many tour guides can arrange a visit to a local artisan's home or workshop for a more personal experience.
