The Orkney Islands are a historic archipelago located off the northern coast of Scotland, a land where Norse and Scottish cultures have intertwined for centuries. Tip: The cathedral is free to enter, but donations are welcome. Its interior is as impressive as its exterior.
Often called the "Scottish Pompeii," Skara Brae is the best-preserved Neolithic village in Western Europe. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Heart of Neolithic Orkney," this ancient village was buried under sand for millennia before being unearthed.
Tip: You can walk through a replica house to get a sense of what life was like for the ancient inhabitants.
No visit to Orkney is complete without seeing the spectacular Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness. These two monumental stone circles stand as mysterious and powerful reminders of Orkney's ancient past. The sites are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage area as Skara Brae.
Tip: These sites are located in the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney" and are often visited together on a single tour.
On the small island of Lamb Holm, you'll find the incredibly moving Italian Chapel. This beautifully painted chapel was built by Italian prisoners of war during WWII using salvaged materials. Its ornate interior is a testament to faith and hope in a time of conflict.
Tip: The chapel is a popular stop on tours, so be prepared for a small crowd.
Scapa Flow is a vast, natural harbor that was the main base of the Royal Navy in both World War I and World War II. The area is steeped in history, and you can still see the famous Churchill Barriers, which were built to protect the harbor.
Tip: History buffs will find Scapa Flow fascinating. Many tours include a visit to key vantage points and museums in the area.
For those who enjoy a dram of whisky, Orkney is home to two famous distilleries: Highland Park and Scapa. Both offer guided tours that provide insight into their unique production processes and the history of whisky-making on the islands, culminating in a tasting.
