Overview
Located along the Chesapeake Bay, Norfolk is home to the world’s largest naval base and a proud maritime tradition. The city’s waterfront offers plenty to explore—walk along the scenic Elizabeth River Trail, tour the Battleship Wisconsin, or visit the Nauticus maritime museum to dive into the area’s seafaring past.
Norfolk also brings a creative and cultural edge. Its downtown is filled with murals, galleries, and performance venues, while neighborhoods like the NEON District highlight local artists and live music. The Chrysler Museum of Art, with its impressive glass collection, is a must-visit, and the nearby Virginia Zoo is a great stop for families.
With a growing food and craft beer scene, lush parks, and easy access to the beaches of nearby Virginia Beach, Norfolk strikes a great balance between energy and ease. Whether you are into history, the arts, or just want to enjoy a waterside city with a friendly local feel, Norfolk delivers with charm and substance.
1 Waterside Drive Norfolk, VA 23510

Stroll through the Historic Freemason District, the city's oldest residential area, filled with beautiful 18th and 19th-century architecture, including cobblestone streets and Federal and Victorian-style homes.
Tip: Visit the Moses Myers House in this district, one of the first homes in the country to be documented as Jewish history.

Next, head to Nauticus, a maritime discovery center and museum located on the downtown waterfront. Nauticus offers interactive exhibits on naval history, marine science, and the environment. Don't miss the chance to tour the Battleship Wisconsin, one of the largest and last battleships built by the U.S. Navy.
Tip: Allocate at least two hours to explore Nauticus and the Battleship Wisconsin. Wear comfortable shoes, as there is a lot of walking involved.

Walk, jog, or bike along the scenic Elizabeth River Trail, a 10.5-mile urban pathway that connects many of Norfolk’s attractions and offers beautiful views of the downtown waterfront and the Elizabeth River.
Tip: The section between the cruise terminal and the Harbor Park baseball stadium is flat and offers excellent views of the Navy ships passing by.

Take a leisurely stroll through the Norfolk Botanical Garden, a beautiful 175-acre garden featuring diverse plant collections, themed gardens, and scenic walking paths. Highlights include the Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, and Butterfly House.
Tip: Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the garden. The garden offers tram tours for those who prefer a guided experience.

Head to the Virginia Zoo, home to over 700 animals from around the world. The zoo features naturalistic habitats, interactive exhibits, and a variety of educational programs. Highlights include the African Savanna, Asia – Trail of the Tiger, and the ZooFarm.
Tip: Allocate at least two hours to explore the zoo. Check the schedule for any animal feedings or keeper talks during your visit.

End your day with a meal at the Waterside District, a vibrant dining and entertainment venue located on the downtown waterfront. The district offers a variety of restaurants, bars, and live music, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the local cuisine.
Tip: Try some fresh seafood or Southern comfort food at one of the waterfront restaurants. The district is a great place to unwind and take in the views of the Elizabeth River.
