Overview
Nootka Sound carves into the wild west coast of Vancouver Island, a maze of inlets, islands, and old-growth rainforest reachable only by boat or floatplane. The sound is the ancestral home of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples and the site of first contact between Europeans and Indigenous peoples in British Columbia. Whales, sea otters, and black bears move through a landscape where the road simply ends—and the ocean, the forest, and the weather take over. The nearest road-linked town is Gold River, from which the historic MV Uchuck III freighter sails visitors deep into the sound.
What defines Nootka Sound is its balance of deep history and raw wilderness. You move from a 4,000-year-old village site to an untouched tidal channel, from the creak of a working freighter to the silence of old-growth forest, and from Indigenous carving sheds to breaching humpbacks offshore. Access is an adventure in itself, the wildlife is genuinely wild, and the past feels close enough to touch. It's a destination at the very edge of the map.

Tip: Book early—summer sailings sell out weeks ahead.

Tip: Only for experienced hikers—carry tide tables and a marine radio.

Tip: Walk the beach trail at low tide for the easiest route.

Tip: Ask about bentwood boxes and masks in progress.
A maze of islets and reefs on the sound's outer edge.
Tip: Kayakers prize its sheltered channels and sea-otter sightings.
