Overview
Naxos, the largest and most fertile island in the Cyclades, is a celebrated Greek cruise port renowned for its rich history, stunning beaches, and a unique blend of ancient and Venetian architecture. According to Greek mythology, Naxos was where the god Dionysus married Princess Ariadne, a legendary past that is still tangible in its ancient ruins. The main town, Naxos Town (or Chora), is a captivating labyrinth of whitewashed Cycladic alleys and Venetian-era mansions crowned by a magnificent castle (Kastro).
A visit to Naxos offers a perfect mix of ancient wonders and modern island life. The iconic symbol of Naxos, the Portara, is a massive marble archway standing on a small islet connected to the port by a causeway. This gateway is all that remains of an unfinished Temple of Apollo from the 6th century BC and offers a truly spectacular setting, especially during sunset.
Tip: The Portara is located within a 10-minute walk from the cruise pier. It is the perfect spot for memorable photographs and to welcome you to the island.
Lose yourself in the enchanting maze of alleys in Naxos Town's Old Town. The narrow, winding streets lead you up to the majestic Venetian Kastro, a medieval castle district with an imposing main gate, traditional shops, charming cafes, and a commanding view over the harbor.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as the streets are cobbled and can be steep. Take your time to discover the hidden squares and quaint shops.
Naxos is famed for its beautiful beaches. For a quick and easy beach fix, Agios Georgios Beach is just a short walk from the port. For a longer excursion, consider a bus or taxi to the more extensive golden sands of Agios Prokopios or the vast dunes of Plaka Beach.
Tip: Most of the main beaches offer sun loungers and umbrellas for rent, as well as beachfront tavernas for food and drinks.
Journey inland to the Temple of Demeter, one of the island's most significant archaeological sites. This early 6th-century BC temple is a testament to Naxos's ancient religious importance and provides a serene, historical experience amidst the island's beautiful rural landscape.
Tip: The site is located in the Sangri Valley, about a 20-minute drive from the port. Consider hiring a taxi or renting a car for this excursion.
Take an excursion into the heart of the island to discover its traditional mountain villages. Apiranthos, known as the "marble village," and Halki, with its Venetian architecture and old citron liqueur distillery, offer a glimpse into the island's authentic culture away from the coast.
Tip: The inland villages are a great place to find unique local handicrafts and to experience the genuine Naxian way of life.
