Explore the impressive ruins of the Palace of the Despots, the residence of the Byzantine rulers of the Morea. Though mostly in ruins, the palace still conveys a sense of grandeur and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape from its elevated position.
*Tip: The palace is located in the Upper Town, so be prepared for a climb to reach it.
For breathtaking panoramic views of the entire site and the vast plains of Laconia, make the climb to the top of the Citadel, or Mystras Castle. This Frankish-built fortress (1249) offers a magnificent vantage point and is a testament to the strategic importance of the city.
*Tip: There are two entrances to the site (upper and lower). Entering from the upper gate will make the climb to the castle much shorter, allowing you to walk downhill through the main parts of the city.
Located in the courtyard of the Metropolis of St. Demetrios, the Archaeological Museum of Mystras is a small but valuable stop. It houses artifacts, sculptures, and religious items excavated from the site, providing a deeper understanding of daily life and art in the Byzantine era.
*Tip: The museum offers a cool, shaded break from the sun and is a perfect place to rest while soaking up more history.
