Overview
Mt. Fuji, Japan’s most recognizable natural landmark, is a breathtaking inland destination that defines the country's spiritual and cultural landscape. As a perfectly symmetrical, snow-capped volcano, it has inspired artists, poets, and pilgrims for centuries. While not a cruise port itself, it is a key shore excursion for those arriving at nearby ports, providing a rare opportunity to witness this majestic peak up close.
A visit to Mt. Fuji is more than just a sightseeing trip; it is an immersive experience that allows you to explore the stunning natural beauty and unique culture of the surrounding Fuji Five Lakes region. From tranquil lakes and serene forests to historic shrines and a network of trails, the area offers a variety of activities that showcase different perspectives of the mountain. Seeing Mt. Fuji is an unforgettable moment that captures the essence of Japan's natural wonder.
Most bus tours from cruise ports take visitors to the Mt. Fuji Fifth Station, located at 2,300 meters (7,546 ft) above sea level. This is the highest point accessible by road on the mountain and offers spectacular, often cloud-level views of the surrounding landscape. The station has shops, restaurants, and a small shrine.
*Tip: The weather at the Fifth Station can be very different from the ports below. It is often much colder and can be cloudy, so bring a warm jacket even if the weather at sea level is warm.
Take a scenic cruise on Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), a beautiful crater lake in the Hakone area. The pirate ship-style boats offer stunning views of Mt. Fuji, particularly on a clear day, as well as the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine on the water's edge.
*Tip: Lake Ashi is often paired with a visit to the Owakudani volcanic valley on a combined tour, creating a full day of sightseeing in the Hakone region.
For a panoramic view of the area, ride the Hakone Ropeway. This gondola lift provides incredible views of the active volcanic zone of Owakudani, with its steaming vents and sulfurous hot springs. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Fuji perfectly framed by the surrounding mountains.
*Tip: The air at Owakudani is sulfurous, so be aware if you have respiratory issues. You can purchase eggs cooked in the sulfur springs, said to add years to your life.
For the most iconic photo of Mt. Fuji, visit the Arakurayama Sengen Shrine. After a climb of nearly 400 steps, you will reach the Chureito Pagoda, which offers the classic postcard view of the five-storied pagoda with Mt. Fuji and cherry blossoms (in season) or autumn leaves in the background.
*Tip: This location requires a bit of physical effort to climb the stairs, but it is well worth it for the stunning view.
Visit the serene Gotemba Peace Park, which offers excellent, distant views of Mt. Fuji. The park is a symbol of peace, with a beautiful white stupa and golden statues, and it provides a tranquil setting for contemplation and photography.
*Tip: The park is often a stop on bus tours to and from Mt. Fuji, so it's a convenient place to stretch your legs and get a different perspective of the mountain.
If your excursion allows, visit the area around Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. It is considered one of the best places to see Mt. Fuji, with a variety of perspectives, including from a cruise on the lake or from the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway.
*Tip: The Kawaguchiko area is known for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant autumn colors, so the view changes dramatically depending on your time of visit.
