Overview
Makalali Private Game Reserve is a secluded and intimate wildlife sanctuary located west of the Kruger National Park. Spanning over 26,000 hectares, the reserve is home to the renowned "Big Five" as well as a rich diversity of other wildlife, from giraffes and cheetahs to a wide array of birdlife. The heart of the Makalali safari experience is the twice-daily game drive. Guided by an expert ranger and tracker in an open Land Rover, you'll venture into the bush at sunrise and sunset, the best times to spot predators and other wildlife.
Tip: Early morning drives can be quite cool, so bring a jacket or blanket. Evening drives often include a "sundowner" stop to watch the sunset with a drink in hand.
For a different perspective on the wilderness, take a guided bush walk. Accompanied by an armed ranger, you'll leave the vehicle to track animals on foot and learn about the smaller details of the ecosystem, from animal tracks and plants to insects.
Tip: A bush walk provides a chance to appreciate the sounds and smells of the bush that you can't experience from a vehicle.
Dining is a key part of the experience at Makalali. Your lodge will arrange special dinners, such as a romantic dinner in the bush under the stars or a traditional boma dinner, a feast in an enclosed, open-air area with a central fire.
