Overview
Perched high above deep river valleys, the city is known for its unique layout—think clifftop views, centuries-old fortifications, and bridges that connect upper and lower quarters of town. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is full of winding alleys, charming squares, and stories that stretch back to the Middle Ages.
Despite its historic roots, Luxembourg is also a thoroughly modern city. It’s a hub for international institutions, a melting pot of cultures, and a place where you will hear multiple languages on a single street. Museums, parks, and world-class dining round out the experience making it an easy and enjoyable city to explore.
Whether you’re strolling along the Corniche, relaxing in the Grund, or sampling local wines and pastries, Luxembourg offers a refreshing mix of calm, culture, and quiet beauty.

Start your day by exploring the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. This stunning building, located in the heart of Luxembourg City, is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. While it’s only open to the public during certain times of the year, you can still admire the palace from the outside and take in the beauty of its surrounding square.
Tip: If you visit during the summer months, check the schedule for the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony, a unique experience showcasing Luxembourg's military traditions.

Luxembourg City’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with picturesque streets, charming squares, and historical landmarks. Take a leisurely stroll through the cobbled streets, passing by the Place d'Armes, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and The Bock Casemates, an ancient network of tunnels that once served as the city’s defensive system.
Tip: Visit Place Guillaume II for a taste of local life and maybe a coffee at one of the many charming cafés.

The Bock Casemates are an extensive network of underground tunnels and galleries built into the rocky cliffs of Luxembourg City. These fortifications were originally constructed in the 17th century and expanded over time. Today, you can explore the tunnels and enjoy stunning views of the city and the surrounding valley.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes as you’ll be walking through narrow, winding passages, and don't forget to bring a camera for those panoramic views.

Pay a visit to the American Cemetery Memorial, located just outside the city center. It’s the final resting place for 5,076 American soldiers who died during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. The cemetery is peaceful, moving, and offers a somber but beautiful tribute to the bravery of those who fought for freedom.
Tip: Take some time to reflect and enjoy the serenity of the place; it’s a quiet, respectful spot away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Discover the Notre-Dame Cathedral, a beautiful example of late Gothic architecture with Renaissance elements. The cathedral is the only one in Luxembourg and features stunning stained-glass windows and an impressive crypt that houses the tombs of the Grand Ducal family.
Tip: The interior is peaceful and a good place to appreciate the city's religious art and history.

For a taste of modern Luxembourg, head to the Kirchberg District. This area is home to striking modern architecture, including the European Court of Justice, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, and the Mudam (Musee d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean). If you enjoy contemporary art or architecture, this district is a must-see.
Tip: If you have a bit of time, take in a performance or visit an exhibition at the Philharmonie or Mudam to experience the artistic side of Luxembourg.

If you’re looking for some fresh air and natural beauty, take a walk through Petrusse Park. Nestled in a deep valley, this park offers a tranquil escape with its lush greenery, scenic views, and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great place to relax after a busy day of sightseeing.
Tip: Petrusse Park is located near the Bock Casemates, so it’s easy to enjoy the best of both natural beauty and historical landmarks.

Before heading back to your cruise, indulge in some local Luxembourgish cuisine. Dishes like Judd mat Gaardebounen (smoked pork with broad beans), Gromperekichelcher (fried potato cakes), and Quetschentaart (plum tart) are delicious local specialties. You can find these dishes at various restaurants, especially in the city center or near the historic areas.
Tip: For a more relaxed experience, visit one of the local brasseries or cafés and try some Luxembourgish wine to go along with your meal.
