Explore Drepung Monastery, once the largest monastery in the world and a significant center of Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Wander through its ancient courtyards, assembly halls, and colleges, experiencing its vast scale and historical importance.
Tip: Drepung is built on a hillside; be prepared for some uphill walking. It offers excellent views of the Lhasa Valley.
Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of Barkhor Street and the surrounding Tibetan Quarter. This vibrant area around the Jokhang Temple is filled with traditional Tibetan shops, stalls selling religious artifacts, local crafts, and delicious street food.
Tip: Practice respectful bargaining if you plan to purchase souvenirs. Be open to trying local snacks and teas.
Relax and absorb the local culture at a traditional Tibetan tea house. Enjoy a cup of butter tea (a staple of Tibetan cuisine) or sweet milk tea, and observe locals engaging in conversation and playing traditional games.
