Leipzig, a city with a rich history spanning over a thousand years, is a dynamic blend of tradition and modernity. Tip: Check the choir's schedule in advance, as they perform regularly, and hearing them sing in their historic home is a truly special experience.
The Battle of the Nations Monument is a colossal structure commemorating the defeat of Napoleon's army in 1813. It is one of the largest monuments in Europe. You can climb to the top for a spectacular panoramic view of Leipzig and the surrounding landscape.
Tip: The climb involves a few hundred steps, but an elevator is available to take you part of the way up. The view from the top is well worth the effort.
Leipzig's Old Town is the vibrant heart of the city, centered around the Market Square. Admire the stunning Renaissance-style Old City Hall, browse the stalls at the weekly market (or the famous Christmas market in winter), and explore the many charming courtyards and pedestrian streets.
Tip: From the main square, explore the Mädler Passage, a beautiful covered shopping arcade that is home to the famous Auerbachs Keller restaurant, immortalized in Goethe's "Faust."
Beyond Bach, Leipzig is also where composers like Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Schumann lived and worked. You can visit the Mendelssohn House Museum, the Bach Museum, and the Museum of Musical Instruments to dive deeper into the city's profound musical legacy.
Tip: The Bach Museum, located right across from the St. Thomas Church, is a must-see for a comprehensive look at the composer's life and work in Leipzig.
One of Germany's most modern zoos, the Leipzig Zoo is famous for its natural habitats and groundbreaking "Gondwanaland" tropical hall, which simulates a rainforest environment. It's a great destination for families and animal lovers.
Tip: The zoo is quite large, so plan to spend at least half a day there to see all the different exhibits.
