Overview
Lecce, affectionately known as the "Florence of the South," is a city of breathtaking beauty and architectural splendor, located on the Salento peninsula in the Apulia region of Italy. Unlike many Italian cities built of marble or stone, Lecce is almost entirely constructed from a soft, golden limestone known as pietra leccese. The Basilica di Santa Croce is the undisputed masterpiece of Lecce's Baroque architecture. Lecce's most dramatic square, the Piazza del Duomo, is a grand, enclosed space that feels like a private courtyard. It is home to the beautifully decorated Lecce Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, and the ornate Seminary Palace, all showcasing the city's signature Baroque style.

Lecce's ancient history is visible right in the heart of the city. The partially excavated Roman Amphitheater sits right in the main square (Piazza Sant'Oronzo), while the more complete but smaller Roman Theatre is tucked away on a side street.
Tip: The amphitheater is a great place to sit and people-watch, as it's a central gathering spot for locals and tourists alike.
The joy of visiting Lecce lies in simply wandering its historic center. Get lost in the narrow, cobblestone streets, where you'll find charming artisan shops, cozy cafes, and countless small churches and courtyards that reveal the city's hidden beauty.
Tip: Keep an eye out for local artists and craftsmen, especially those working with papier-mâché, a traditional art form of the city.
Indulge in a Pasticciotto, the culinary symbol of Lecce. This small oval-shaped pastry is filled with a delicious cream custard and is best enjoyed warm from one of the many local bakeries (pasticcerie).
Tip: Pair your pasticciotto with a strong espresso or a traditional caffè in ghiaccio con latte di mandorla (iced coffee with almond milk).
Lecce has a long-standing tradition of crafting intricate figures from papier-mâché (cartapesta). Many workshops still exist, where you can watch the artisans at work and purchase unique, handmade souvenirs.
Tip: A visit to the Museo della Cartapesta in the castle can provide context on this unique art form before you seek out a local workshop.
