Overview
La Serena is the capital of the Coquimbo Region in Chile, located on the Pacific coast, approximately 470 kilometers (290 miles) north of Santiago. It is Chile's second oldest city, renowned for its distinctive neo-colonial architecture, characterized by beautiful stone churches, tree-lined avenues, and well-maintained plazas, which were largely restored under the "Plan Serena" in the mid-20th century.

Immerse yourself in local culture at La Recova Municipal Market, a vibrant covered market known for its handicrafts, local produce, and traditional foods. You can find everything from copper and silver jewelry to ceramics, textiles, and local delicacies like papayas and "manjar" (dulce de leche) products.
Tip: This is an excellent place to buy souvenirs and sample regional flavors. Try some local sweets or a glass of fresh papaya juice.
Stroll or cycle along the Avenida del Mar, a long coastal promenade connecting La Serena with its twin city, Coquimbo. Enjoy the wide sandy beaches, and visit the iconic Faro Monumental (Monumental Lighthouse), a distinctive symbol of the city, offering great views from its base.
Tip: The beaches are popular in summer. The lighthouse is particularly striking for photos, especially around sunset.
Embark on an astronomy tour to one of the world-class observatories in the nearby Elqui Valley or a dedicated amateur observatory like Mamalluca or Pangue. The region's exceptionally clear and dry skies make it one of the best places on Earth for stargazing.
Tip: Book tours in advance, as they are very popular. Tours usually include transportation from La Serena and guided observation sessions. Dress warmly, as desert nights can be cool.
Take a day trip into the picturesque Elqui Valley, a verdant oasis amidst the arid landscape. Explore charming towns like Vicuña or Pisco Elqui, visit pisco distilleries to learn about and taste Chile's national spirit, and enjoy the tranquil, spiritual ambiance of the valley.
Tip: Many tours combine astronomy with pisco tasting. The valley is also known for its vineyards and fruit orchards.
Take a boat trip from Punta de Choros (a few hours north) to Isla Damas within the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve. This reserve is home to diverse marine wildlife, including Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and bottlenose dolphins. You might even spot whales during the right season (October to April).
Tip: This is a full-day excursion that requires an early start. It's a must for wildlife enthusiasts and offers beautiful white sand beaches.
