Here, you can wander for hours through charming pedestrian streets with their distinctive arcades, which were originally built to protect merchants from the elements. Travel a short distance south to the historic town of Rochefort. Here, you can discover its rich naval heritage at the Corderie Royale (the former royal ropeworks) and see a faithful replica of the 18th-century frigate, the Hermione, which sailed Lafayette to America.
