Tip: Join a guided stargazing tour for the best experience and access to telescopes. Even without a tour, the night sky from here is breathtaking. Dress warmly, as it can be cold at this altitude.
Embark on a hike within Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a gigantic volcanic crater (actually an erosion caldera). Trails lead through pine forests and dramatic ravines, offering stunning views of its immense scale and unique geology.
Tip: Popular routes include the descent into the caldera itself (requires a permit and shuttle/taxi arrangement) or viewpoints like Mirador de La Cumbrecita for easier access.
Wander through the charming capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, a historic city with beautifully preserved colonial architecture. Admire its colorful wooden balconies along the Avenida Marítima, visit the Plaza de España, and explore Calle O'Daly with its shops and historic buildings.
Tip: The city is easily walkable from the cruise port. Don't miss the Naval Museum, housed in a replica of Columbus's Santa María ship.
Explore the more recent volcanic landscapes in the south of the island, including areas affected by the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption. Visit the San Antonio Volcano Visitor Centre for insights into the island's volcanic activity and walk around its crater.
Tip: Guided treks to the newest lava flows (Tajogaite volcano) offer a unique perspective on the island's geological forces. Observe safety guidelines and designated paths.
Enjoy the unique volcanic black sand beaches, such as Playa de Puerto Naos or Playa de Tazacorte, which are popular for swimming and relaxation. Alternatively, swim in the natural seawater pools like Charco Azul or La Fajana, formed by volcanic rocks.

Hike through the ancient, misty Los Tilos laurel forest, a prime example of La Palma's incredible biodiversity and a core part of its Biosphere Reserve status. This lush, subtropical forest feels like a journey back in time.
