Overview
La Gomera is one of Spain's Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. Often referred to as "La Isla Mágica" (The Magic Island) or "The Green Island," it stands out from its larger, more tourist-centric neighbors due to its incredibly lush, primeval forests, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and tranquil atmosphere. A significant portion of the island is covered by Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring an ancient laurel forest (laurisilva) that dates back to the Tertiary period, often shrouded in a mystical mist.
La Gomera is also famous for "El Silbo Gomero," a unique whistled language developed by the island's original inhabitants to communicate across deep ravines. The island's rugged topography, with its deep valleys and steep cliffs, makes it a paradise for hikers and nature lovers seeking solitude and unspoiled beauty. With its charming villages, black sand beaches, and a slow-paced way of life, La Gomera offers an authentic and serene escape.
Immerse yourself in the magical Garajonay National Park, home to a rare and ancient laurisilva forest. Hike through its misty, moss-covered trails that feel like a fairy tale. Several viewpoints, like Mirador de Los Roques, offer stunning vistas.
Tip: The park has over 600km of marked trails. Wear layers as the weather can change quickly within the forest, and sturdy shoes for hiking. Visit the Juego de Bolas Visitor Centre for maps and information.
Experience the thrilling Mirador de Abrante, a glass-floored viewing platform perched 600 meters above the village of Agulo. It offers breathtaking, seemingly floating views over Agulo and out to sea, with Tenerife and Mount Teide visible on clear days.
Tip: There's a restaurant at the viewpoint, perfect for enjoying local cuisine with a spectacular backdrop. Great for unique photos!
Reach the highest point on the island, Alto de Garajonay (1,487m). The relatively easy hike to the summit offers incredible 360-degree panoramic views of the entire island and, on a clear day, views of neighboring Canary Islands like Tenerife, La Palma, and El Hierro.
Tip: This is a rewarding hike that provides a full appreciation of La Gomera's diverse landscapes.
Explore San Sebastián de La Gomera, the island's charming capital and main port. Wander through its historic streets, visit the Torre del Conde (a 15th-century fortress), and see the Casa de Colón (Columbus House), where Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed before his voyage to the New World.
Tip: The town has a pleasant atmosphere, local shops, and some urban black sand beaches. It's an important historical stop.
Seek out a demonstration of El Silbo Gomero, the unique whistled language of La Gomera. This incredible form of communication, once essential for transmitting messages across the island's deep ravines, is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Tip: Some restaurants or cultural centers (like the Visitor Centre in Garajonay National Park) offer demonstrations. It's a fascinating cultural insight.
While La Gomera is not primarily a beach destination like some other Canaries, it offers beautiful volcanic black sand beaches. Valle Gran Rey on the west coast is popular for its bohemian vibe and sunsets, while Playa de Santiago in the south offers calmer waters.
Tip: These beaches are perfect for soaking up the sun and enjoying the unique coastal scenery. Always be mindful of Atlantic currents.
