Overview
L'Orient, located on the southern coast of Brittany, is a city with a rich and complex maritime history. Heavily bombed during World War II due to its strategic German submarine base, the city was meticulously rebuilt and has since re-emerged as a vibrant nautical and cultural center. While it may not have the same recognition as other French ports, Lorient is a preferred stop for many cruise lines, offering a perfect blend of seafaring heritage, a burgeoning arts scene, and access to the enchanting Breton countryside.

Step into a piece of WWII history at the Keroman Submarine Base. This massive, unassailable German U-boat base is now a historical site open to the public. You can walk around the massive concrete pens and even tour the interior of the Flore, a French submarine.
Tip: Booking a tour of the submarine in advance is recommended, as it is a very popular activity. The sheer scale of the base is impressive to see in person.
Located right next to the submarine base, the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly is a modern, interactive sailing museum dedicated to ocean racing and the legacy of the famous French sailor, Éric Tabarly. The museum is a fun and educational experience for all ages.
Tip: You can often take a guided tour of the pontoons to see some of the world's fastest racing yachts up close.
For a true escape, take a short, 45-minute ferry ride to the beautiful and wild Île de Groix. This small island is a haven for cyclists and hikers, with stunning coastal paths, colorful fishing villages, and unique geological features like its convex beach.
Tip: Ferry tickets are sold at the passenger port. Renting a bicycle on the island is a popular and fun way to explore.
Across the harbor from Lorient is the historic town of Port-Louis, dominated by its magnificent 17th-century citadel. The citadel is a fortress designed by the master engineer Vauban and houses a museum about the French East India Company and the history of shipwrecks.
Tip: A local "Batobus" (ferry bus) provides a cheap and easy way to cross the harbor from Lorient to Port-Louis.
Located inside the Port-Louis Citadel, the French East India Company Museum details the history of this powerful trading company that established Lorient in the 17th century. The museum showcases artifacts, maps, and models that tell the story of the city's prosperous past.
Tip: The museum offers a fantastic view from the top of the citadel walls.
Brittany is famous for its culinary traditions. Be sure to try a delicious and authentic Breton crêpe or galette (a savory crêpe made with buckwheat flour). The city's fishing port ensures that the seafood is exceptionally fresh.
Tip: Find a cozy local restaurant and order a moules-frites (mussels and fries) for a classic French seaside meal.
