Kolona Beach is Kythnos’ most famous beach and a true natural wonder. It is a narrow strip of sand that connects the main island to a small islet, creating a beach on both sides. The scenery is absolutely stunning and provides a perfect spot for sunbathing and swimming in the crystal-clear water.
Tip: Getting here can be a bit challenging, requiring a taxi, boat taxi, or a long walk. Pre-arranging your transport is highly recommended.
Kythnos is known for its therapeutic natural hot springs located in the small village of Loutra. The hot water flows into a pool next to the sea, where you can soak and relax. The springs are said to have healing properties and were used by the Greek royal family in the past.
Tip: The temperature of the water can be quite high, so test it before you get in. There is no fee to use the springs, which are located next to the main beach.
Wander through the narrow, whitewashed alleys of Chora (Kythnos Town), the island's charming capital. It's a classic Cycladic village with bougainvillea-covered archways, small shops, and tavernas. Then, head to Dryopida, a village built in a ravine, known for its traditional architecture and a well-known cave.
Tip: Dryopida is a great place to find local crafts and souvenirs. The village is unique because its houses are built in a traditional style with red tiles, a contrast to the typical flat-roofed Cycladic homes.
Just a short walk from the main port of Merichas, Martinakia Beach is a perfect spot for a quick and easy swim. This well-organized beach has some shade and is a great option for a relaxing break after disembarking from a small tender.
Tip: Martinakia is an ideal choice if you have limited time and just want a simple beach day close to the port.
In the village of Dryopida, you can visit the Katafyki Cave. This large, natural cave is open to visitors and features impressive stalactites and stalagmites. It served as a shelter and a mine in the past.
Tip: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the path inside the cave can be wet and slippery.
The main port of Merichas is a lively spot with a variety of restaurants and cafes. It is a great place to enjoy a traditional Greek meal, particularly fresh seafood. Take a seat at a waterfront taverna and watch the local fishing boats come and go.
