Tip: The best time for photos is in the morning when the sun is behind you, making the gold leaf sparkle on the water.
Find a moment of serenity by strolling through the soaring, ethereal stalks of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. The sound of the wind rustling through the bamboo is incredibly peaceful and a sensory experience that makes for a beautiful and calming walk.
Tip: To beat the crowds, which can be significant, plan to visit the Bamboo Grove as early in the morning as possible.
Wander through the historic streets of Gion, Kyoto's most famous geisha district. With its traditional wooden machiya merchant houses, teahouses, and exclusive restaurants, Gion offers a glimpse into a world of traditional Japanese culture. You may even be lucky enough to spot a maiko (apprentice geisha) or geiko (geisha) in the evening.
Tip: Be respectful of the privacy of geisha and maiko, and do not block their path or take photos without permission. Observing them from a distance is the best way to appreciate their traditional attire and grace.
Perched on a hillside with a stunning wooden stage jutting out over the valley, Kiyomizu-dera Temple offers spectacular views of Kyoto. The temple is famous for the "Otowa Waterfall," where visitors can drink from streams said to grant wishes for longevity, success, or love.
Tip: The walk to the temple is on a charming slope called Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, lined with traditional shops and eateries—a great spot to find local souvenirs and street food.
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's culinary scene at Nishiki Market, a narrow, five-block-long shopping street known as "Kyoto's Kitchen." Sample a wide variety of local foods, from pickled vegetables and fresh seafood to unique sweets and snacks.
