Kristiansund is a unique coastal city in the Nordmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Distinctively built on four main islands (Kirkelandet, Innlandet, Nordlandet, and Gomalandet) and numerous smaller islets, it presents a fascinating urban landscape deeply connected to the sea. Experience Kristiansund's most iconic form of public transport: the Sundbåten. This small passenger ferry has been operating since 1876, connecting the city's four main islands. It's the world's oldest continuously running public transport service and offers a unique and charming way to see the city from the water.
Tip: Take a full round trip (about 20 minutes) for a quick overview of the city's different islands and harbor. You can hop on and off to explore various districts.
Take a boat trip (around 35 minutes in summer) out to Grip, an incredibly picturesque, car-free old fishing village located on a tiny island 14 km out in the open sea. Explore the colorful houses, the unique Grip Stave Church (dating from the 14th century), and the lighthouse.
Tip: Boat trips usually run in the summer season. This is a highly recommended excursion for its unique atmosphere and history. Check boat schedules as they can be limited.
Embark on a drive along the legendary Atlantic Ocean Road, often called "the world's best road trip." This Norwegian Scenic Route is an architectural marvel, crossing seven bridges that meander between small islands and skerries at the very edge of the open sea, offering spectacular views and a thrilling driving experience.
Tip: Rent a car for this excursion. It's about a 30-40 minute drive from Kristiansund. Allow plenty of time for photo stops, especially at the iconic Storseisundet Bridge.
Learn about Kristiansund's most famous culinary export at the Norwegian Clipfish Museum. Housed in an old wharf building from 1749 on Gomalandet island, the museum provides an authentic insight into the history, production, and importance of clipfish (bacalao) to the city.
Tip: This is a great way to understand the city's heritage. Look for the "Klippfiskkjerringa" (Clipfish Woman) statue down in the harbor, a tribute to the women who worked in the industry.
Take a short walk up to Varden Viewpoint (Varden Utsiktspunkt) on Kirkelandet island. This old sentry tower offers superb panoramic views of Kristiansund, its surrounding islands, the sea, and the dramatic coastal landscape.
Tip: The path up is well-maintained. It's a fantastic spot for photography, especially on a clear day.
Step back in time at Mellemværftet Historic Shipyard, Norway's only living shipbuilding museum, founded in 1856. Here you can see old veteran ships under repair and learn about traditional craftsmanship and the history of wooden shipbuilding.
Tip: Check for guided tours, which can offer deeper insights into the working shipyard. It's located on Innlandet island, accessible by Sundbåten.
