Kos is the third-largest island in the Dodecanese island group in Greece, located in the southeastern Aegean Sea, very close to the coast of Turkey. Tip: The castle is particularly atmospheric around sunset. Wear comfortable shoes as there's a lot of walking on uneven surfaces.
Just a short drive from Kos Town lies the Asklepion, an ancient healing sanctuary dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius. This was once a famous medical school where Hippocrates himself is believed to have taught. Explore its terraced ruins, temples, and stoas, offering stunning views.
Tip: This is an incredibly significant historical site. Consider hiring a guide or reading up on its history beforehand to fully appreciate its importance.
Head to Empros Thermes (Thermal Springs) on the southeastern coast of the island. These natural hot springs flow into a rock-enclosed pool right on the edge of the sea, offering a warm, therapeutic bathing experience in a beautiful setting.
Tip: The rocks can be slippery, so wear water shoes. The water can be very hot, so enter gradually. It's a unique and relaxing natural spa experience.
Kos boasts numerous beautiful beaches. Depending on your preference, visit Paradise Beach (known for its "bubble beach" effect from volcanic gases), Tigaki Beach (long and sandy, popular for watersports), or Mastichari Beach (more relaxed with clear waters).
Tip: Many beaches offer sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, along with beach bars and tavernas. Consider renting a car or scooter to explore multiple beaches.
Escape the coastal resorts and explore the traditional mountain villages of Kos. Zia is famous for its stunning sunset views over the entire island and nearby Turkish coast, as well as its charming shops. Antimachia boasts a well-preserved castle and a traditional windmill.
Tip: Zia can get very crowded at sunset, so arrive early to secure a good spot at a taverna. These villages offer authentic Greek island charm.
