The main hub of the Micronesian island nation of Palau.

Overview
Koror is the largest city and former capital of the Republic of Palau, an island nation in Micronesia, located in the western Pacific Ocean. Though Ngerulmud on Babeldaob island is now the official capital, Koror remains the commercial, cultural, and population center of Palau. It serves as the primary gateway to Palau's globally renowned Rock Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is widely considered one of the world's premier diving and snorkeling destinations.
The city itself is built across several small islands connected by bridges, offering a mix of modern amenities, local markets, and a glimpse into Palauan life. Koror's true allure, however, lies in its immediate proximity to an underwater paradise. Its pristine waters, vibrant coral reefs, an incredible diversity of marine life (including sharks, manta rays, and unique jellyfish), and fascinating WWII wreck sites make it a magnet for underwater adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Embark on a boat tour to the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a must-do for snorkeling or diving. Explore a labyrinth of mushroom-shaped limestone islands, hidden lagoons, and world-class dive sites teeming with vibrant corals, diverse fish, and larger marine life.
Tip: Many tour operators in Koror offer full-day Rock Island tours that include multiple snorkeling/dive spots, a picnic lunch, and scenic stops. A valid Rock Islands permit is required.
While it was temporarily closed for recovery, inquire if Jellyfish Lake has reopened to visitors. If so, it offers a unique opportunity to swim among millions of stingless golden jellyfish, an incredibly surreal and unforgettable experience found almost nowhere else on Earth.
Tip: If open, follow all guidelines to protect the delicate ecosystem. Do not use sunscreen or touch the jellyfish. A separate permit is required.
Dive or snorkel the famous German Channel, an artificial waterway created by German miners. It's renowned as a reliable spot to encounter manta rays, often seen feeding or at cleaning stations. You might also spot reef sharks and other large pelagic species.
Tip: This is a popular dive site, often included in multi-stop dive charters from Koror.
For certified divers, explore the numerous World War II shipwrecks scattered around Palau, remnants of the intense "Operation Stalemate II" battle in 1944. These wrecks are now artificial reefs, teeming with marine life, and offer a unique historical dive experience.
Tip: Many dive shops in Koror specialize in wreck diving tours. Wrecks include cargo ships, oilers, and even a seaplane.
Take a guided excursion to Babeldaob, Palau's largest island, to hike to Ngardmau Waterfall. This refreshing trek through the jungle leads to Palau's tallest waterfall, where you can swim in the natural pools at its base.
Tip: This often involves crossing the Koror-Babeldaob Bridge. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for humidity. Some tours combine this with other Babeldaob sights.
Learn about Palauan culture, history, and natural environment at the Etpison Museum or the Palau National Museum. Both offer insights into the indigenous traditions, art, and the unique ecosystems of Palau.
Tip: The Etpison Museum is known for its comprehensive exhibits and gift shop. These are good options for non-diving days or to understand the local context.
