Start your exploration at Titov Trg (Tito Square), the heart of Koper's Old Town. This magnificent main square is surrounded by stunning Venetian Gothic architecture. The most prominent building is the Praetorian Palace, a grand 15th-century Venetian Gothic masterpiece that now serves as the Town Hall.
Tip: Climb the bell tower of the Koper Cathedral for panoramic views of the square, the Old Town, and the Adriatic Sea (check opening times and a small fee usually applies).
Dominating Tito Square, the Koper Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary) is a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Step inside to admire its impressive interior, including a beautiful altarpiece by Vittore Carpaccio, and climb its bell tower for fantastic city views.
Tip: The bell tower ascent is steep but rewarding. It's often one of the first things people do for an orientation of the city.
Lose yourself in the labyrinthine narrow streets (ulice) of Koper's Old Town. Discover hidden courtyards, charming independent shops, local cafes, and other historical buildings like the Loggia Palace (Loggia Palace), Armerigonia Palace, and Totto Palace, each telling a story of Koper's past.
Tip: Many streets lead back to the main squares, so feel free to wander and explore without getting too lost.
Take a leisurely stroll along the modern promenade that runs along the waterfront, offering views of the port and the Adriatic. Head towards the Koper Marina to see sailboats and enjoy the sea breeze. This area also connects to a small beach.
Tip: The promenade is a pleasant place for an evening walk or to enjoy an ice cream. It offers a different perspective of the city than the historical center.
Seek out the Muda Gate (Vrata Muda), the only surviving of the original twelve city gates that once guarded Koper. Built in 1516 in Renaissance style, it serves as a historical entrance point to the Old Town from the modern part of the city.
Tip: It's a nice photo opportunity and a reminder of Koper's fortified past.
Indulge in local Istrian cuisine, which is a delightful mix of Slovenian, Italian, and Mediterranean influences. Look for fresh seafood, prosciutto (pršut), olives, and regional pasta dishes. Pair your meal with some excellent local wines from the Slovenian Istrian region, such as Refošk (red) or Malvazija (white).
Tip: Many restaurants around Tito Square and in the narrow streets offer outdoor seating, perfect for people-watching.
