A large floating village on Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake.

Overview
Kompong Luong (also spelled Kampong Luong) is one of the largest and most authentic floating villages on the Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia, located in Pursat Province. Unlike some of the more tourist-heavy floating villages closer to Siem Reap, Kompong Luong offers a raw and unvarnished glimpse into a community where virtually everything exists on the water: houses, shops, schools, pagodas, clinics, petrol stations, and even a Catholic church.
Home to a diverse community, including a significant population of ethnic Vietnamese who, due to historical complexities, often live a stateless existence on the lake, Kompong Luong is a self-sufficient, bustling ecosystem of boats and floating structures. Its exact location shifts with the seasons as the Tonle Sap Lake expands and shrinks. Visiting Kompong Luong provides a profoundly immersive cultural experience, showcasing a unique way of life deeply intertwined with the rhythms of Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake.
The essential experience in Kompong Luong is a boat tour through its intricate network of waterways. Hire a local longtail boat (usually with a driver) to navigate through the "streets" of this floating town. You'll pass homes, businesses, and public buildings, witnessing daily life unfold entirely on the water.
Tip: Boats are hired at the "port" area, which shifts with the lake's water levels. Prices are usually fixed per boat for an hour or so. Go with an open mind, as facilities are very basic.
As you cruise through the village, simply observe the incredible daily life. You'll see children paddling to school, people cooking on floating kitchens, vendors selling groceries from small boats, mechanics fixing boat engines, and families going about their chores. It's a vibrant, dynamic community.
Tip: Be respectful as you are entering people's homes and workplaces. A simple wave and smile are often appreciated.
Your boat tour will likely pass by or stop near a floating school where children learn in a unique environment. You might also see small floating markets where goods are exchanged between residents. These offer a fascinating insight into the community's self-sufficiency.
Tip: The schools are active places; observe from a distance to avoid disrupting classes.
Kompong Luong is home to several floating religious structures, including Buddhist pagodas and a Catholic church. These demonstrate the spiritual life of the diverse community adapting to their watery existence.
Tip: Your boat driver can usually point these out. They stand out with their distinct architecture amidst the homes.
Given that fishing is the main industry, take the opportunity to try fresh fish from the Tonle Sap Lake at one of the small, rustic floating restaurants. This provides a direct taste of the local livelihood.
Tip: These are not fancy restaurants, but they offer an authentic experience and very fresh produce.
If your visit happens during the transition between the wet and dry seasons (e.g., around October-November or April-May), you might witness the incredible phenomenon of the entire village moving its location as the lake expands or shrinks. This showcases the incredible adaptability of the residents.
Tip: While interesting, extreme dry season (March-July) can mean very low water levels, making boat navigation difficult and revealing more of the lakebed, which can be less picturesque.
