Overview
Klaipėda is Lithuania's third-largest city and its only major seaport, strategically located where the Danė River meets the Baltic Sea. With a history stretching back to the 13th century when it was founded by the Teutonic Knights as Memel, Klaipėda boasts a rich and complex heritage influenced by German, Prussian, and Lithuanian cultures. This blend is particularly evident in its charming Old Town, which features unique half-timbered architecture reminiscent of German port cities, mixed with Scandinavian and Lithuanian influences.
Today, Klaipėda is a vibrant city that serves as a crucial economic hub and a popular tourist destination. It offers a fascinating mix of maritime history, artistic flair (with numerous sculptures and street art), and a lively cultural scene. More importantly, it acts as the primary gateway to the stunning Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its shifting sand dunes and pristine beaches, making Klaipėda an essential stop for anyone exploring Lithuania's Baltic coast.
Wander through Klaipėda's charming Old Town (Senamiestis). Unlike other Lithuanian cities, its architecture is distinctly German, with many half-timbered buildings. Discover the cobbled streets, the iconic Theatre Square (Teatro aikštė) with the "Annchen von Tharau" fountain, and various quirky sculptures like "The Magic Mouse" and "The Black Ghost."
Tip: Pay attention to the details and unique architectural features. The Old Town is very walkable.
Cross the lagoon by ferry to the Lithuanian Sea Museum and Dolphinarium, located on the tip of the Curonian Spit peninsula. The museum features aquariums with Baltic Sea and tropical marine life, historical maritime exhibits, and a large open-air section with restored fishing vessels. The Dolphinarium hosts popular dolphin and sea lion shows.
Tip: Check show times for the Dolphinarium in advance, as they are very popular. The ferry ride itself offers nice views of the harbor.
Klaipėda is the gateway to the breathtaking Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a short ferry ride (from the Old Ferry Terminal or New Ferry Terminal) to Smiltynė, the northern tip of the Spit. From there, you can explore by foot, bicycle, or local bus.
Tip: Plan to spend at least half a day, if not more, exploring the Spit. The landscape of shifting sand dunes and pine forests is unique.
Admire the iconic "Meridianas", a beautiful three-masted wooden sailing ship permanently moored on the Danė River in the Old Town. Once a training vessel, it now houses a restaurant. While the restaurant might not always be open for casual visits, its presence is a symbol of Klaipėda's maritime heritage.
Tip: Even if you don't dine there, it's a great photo opportunity and a central landmark.
Take a walk along the Danė River embankment and the modern cruise ship terminal. This area offers views of the port activity, the "Black Ghost" sculpture rising from the water, and provides a pleasant promenade.
Tip: This area is particularly lively when cruise ships are in port and offers nice views of the city from the water's edge.
Klaipėda is known for its quirky and thought-provoking sculptures and street art hidden throughout the Old Town and along the river. Keep an eye out for "The Chimney Sweep," "The Magic Mouse," and "The Black Ghost."
Tip: Many of these sculptures are small and easy to miss, so pay close attention. They add a unique character to the city.
