Overview
Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands, an archipelago located off the northern coast of Scotland. Steeped in a rich tapestry of history that spans from the Stone Age to its strong Norse Viking heritage, Kirkwall is a vibrant and compact town built around a picturesque harbor. It serves as the main ferry port and a bustling hub for visitors exploring Orkney's extraordinary archaeological sites, dramatic coastal landscapes, and unique island culture.
The town's skyline is dominated by the magnificent St. Magnus Cathedral, a testament to its Viking past. Kirkwall offers a delightful blend of ancient wonders and modern island life, with charming independent shops, traditional pubs, and a welcoming community spirit. It's the perfect base from which to discover Orkney's UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, and to experience the distinct character of these northern Scottish islands.
Explore St. Magnus Cathedral, the most northerly cathedral in the UK and a magnificent example of Norse architecture, built from local red and yellow sandstone. Founded in 1137, it's dedicated to St. Magnus, an Orkney Earl, and is remarkably well-preserved. Entry is free (donations welcome), and guided tours are often available.
Tip: Look for the 'masons' marks' and the small, dark prison cell inside. Climb the tower for panoramic views of Kirkwall (check availability for tours).
Wander through the atmospheric ruins of the Earl's Palace (built in the early 17th century by Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney) and the adjacent, older Bishop's Palace (from the 12th century, with later additions). These historical sites offer a glimpse into Orkney's powerful and often turbulent past.
Tip: Both palaces are very close to St. Magnus Cathedral, making them easy to visit together. Imagination helps bring these ruins to life.
Step into Tankerness House Museum, Orkney's oldest private house, dating back to the 16th century, now home to the island's main museum. It showcases fascinating exhibits on Orkney's history, archaeology, natural history, and traditional way of life, from the Stone Age to the present.
Tip: This museum provides excellent context for understanding Orkney's vast archaeological heritage and is a great indoor activity on a rainy day.
Take a leisurely stroll through Kirkwall's narrow, winding "closes" and "wynds" (lanes) that lead off the main street. Discover hidden courtyards, quaint shops, and a charming sense of history in the town's traditional architecture.
Tip: This is a great way to soak up the local atmosphere and find unique independent stores.
For whisky enthusiasts, take a tour of one of Orkney's two renowned whisky distilleries: Highland Park Distillery (the most northerly Scotch whisky distillery in the world, founded in 1798) or Scapa Distillery. Learn about the whisky-making process and enjoy a tasting.
Tip: Book distillery tours in advance, especially during peak season, as they can be very popular. They are easily accessible from Kirkwall by taxi or a short walk.
Browse the shops in Kirkwall for local Orkney crafts and goods. Look for Orkney knitwear, traditional Orkney chairs, local artwork, jewellery, and delicious Orkney produce like cheese, fudge, and Orkney bere bannocks (traditional oatcakes).
Tip: Many shops are located on Albert Street and Victoria Street. This is an excellent opportunity to find unique, authentic souvenirs.
