Khasab is the capital city of the Musandam Governorate, an Omani exclave separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates. The absolute must-do in Khasab is to embark on a traditional Omani dhow cruise into the stunning khors (fjords). Glide through the tranquil, turquoise waters, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and isolated villages accessible only by boat. Most cruises include opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters.
Tip: Many tours visit Telegraph Island (Jazirat al Maqlab), a historic British telegraph relay station. Look out for playful dolphins that often swim alongside the dhows.
The waters of the Musandam fjords are home to several species of dolphins, including bottlenose and spinner dolphins. A dolphin watching excursion is often combined with dhow cruises, as these curious creatures frequently approach boats, offering incredible viewing opportunities.

Explore Khasab Castle, a beautifully restored 17th-century fort built by the Portuguese. The fort houses a small museum showcasing traditional Omani crafts, clothing, and historical artifacts from the Musandam region. Its battlements offer good views of the harbor and mountains.
Tip: The fort provides a good introduction to the local history and culture. It's a relatively small fort, so it doesn't require a lot of time.
Embark on a 4x4 mountain safari to Jebel Harim, the highest peak in Musandam (also known as "Mountain of Women"). The challenging drive offers breathtaking panoramic views of the rugged mountains, deep canyons, and the intricate coastline, and allows glimpses of ancient fossil beds and traditional mountain villages.
Tip: This requires a 4x4 vehicle and ideally an experienced driver or a guided tour. The views from the top are spectacular on a clear day.
Take a leisurely stroll through Khasab town. Visit the local souq (market) to experience traditional Omani commerce, where you might find fresh dates, local spices, textiles, and other goods. It's a good place to soak in the local atmosphere and perhaps find unique souvenirs.
Tip: The souq is relatively small compared to those in Muscat or Nizwa, offering a more intimate experience. Be respectful of local customs.
