A Gateway to the Tongass National Forest and a Shuttle to the "First City"

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Ward Cove is a new and modern cruise port terminal located about seven miles north of downtown Ketchikan. Built on the site of a historic pulp mill, the port offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a two-berth floating dock. While it is not in the heart of the action, it is designed to handle large vessels and provides a unique gateway to the surrounding Tongass National Forest.
The port's welcome center, housed in a repurposed mill building, offers a glimpse into the region's history, along with shops and a theater. The main consideration for passengers arriving here is the distance from downtown Ketchikan. Complimentary shuttle service is provided to connect passengers with the main downtown area, a journey that typically takes 20-30 minutes. This makes for a different kind of port day, with a focus on either excursions that operate directly from Ward Cove or a well-planned trip into town.
The most common choice for visitors is to use the complimentary shuttle service to get to downtown Ketchikan. The shuttle drops you off near the main cruise ship berths, where you can then walk to popular attractions.
Tip: The shuttle ride can have a wait time, especially during peak disembarkation periods. Plan for a total travel time of 45-60 minutes each way. Going earlier in the day or returning earlier can help you avoid long lines.
Once downtown, walk along the famous Creek Street, an elevated boardwalk built on stilts over Ketchikan Creek. This historic district, once the town's red-light district, is now home to charming shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Look for salmon spawning in the creek during the late summer.
Tip: Visit Dolly's House Museum on Creek Street for a glimpse into the area's storied past.
Ketchikan is known as the "Totem Pole Capital of the World." Ward Cove's location is a great starting point for excursions to nearby Saxman Native Village or Totem Bight State Park. These parks are home to the largest collection of totem poles in the world and offer a deep dive into the history and culture of the Tlingit and Haida people.
Tip: A guided tour from Ward Cove to one of these locations is an efficient way to see this cultural highlight without needing to go into downtown first.
Located just a short walk from the downtown docks, the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show is a highly popular and entertaining excursion. Professional lumberjacks compete in a variety of events, including log rolling, tree climbing, and ax throwing.
Tip: This is a fun, fast-paced show that is great for all ages. It's an easy walk from the downtown shuttle drop-off point.
Ward Cove itself is a launch point for several unique excursions. Because of its location in the Tongass National Forest, you can book adventures like kayaking, ziplining, or a rainforest SUV tour that start directly at the terminal, allowing you to skip the downtown shuttle entirely.
Tip: These tours are perfect for those who want to maximize their time in nature and have an adventure-focused port day.
Ketchikan is famous for its fresh seafood, and you won't want to leave without trying some of the local catches. There are many great spots downtown, and some tours from Ward Cove offer opportunities to try local seafood.
Tip: Check out the Alaska Fish House near the downtown docks for some of the best fish and chips in Alaska.
