Overview
Karlskrona is a unique and historically significant city located on the south coast of Sweden, in the region of Blekinge. Founded in 1680 as Sweden's main naval base, its layout and many of its magnificent buildings were meticulously designed and constructed to serve this purpose. This exceptional example of a planned European naval city has earned its place as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its well-preserved Baroque architecture and its ongoing function as a naval base.
Spread across several islands and islets in the beautiful Blekinge archipelago, Karlskrona seamlessly blends its military heritage with stunning natural surroundings. It offers visitors a fascinating journey through naval history, architectural grandeur, and the tranquility of its coastal setting, making it an appealing destination for history buffs, maritime enthusiasts, and those seeking to explore Sweden's picturesque southern coast and island world.
Delve into Karlskrona's raison d'être at the Marinmuseum (Naval Museum). This world-class museum offers fascinating exhibits on Swedish naval history, including real submarines, ship models, and interactive displays. Afterwards, walk along Kungsbron, the king's pier, to see active naval vessels and the historic old dry docks.
Tip: Allow ample time for the museum, especially if you want to explore the real submarine. The museum entrance is unique, with a glass tunnel extending into the water.
Admire the architectural masterpieces of Karlskrona's central square, Stortorget. The Fredrikskyrkan (Fredrik's Church) is a magnificent Baroque church by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. Nearby, the circular Trefaldighetskyrkan (Holy Trinity Church), also Baroque, shows Italian influence.
Tip: Both churches offer impressive interiors. The square itself is a great place to soak in the atmosphere and admire the surrounding historic buildings.
Spend time in Stortorget, one of Europe's largest town squares. Flanked by the two grand churches, the Town Hall, and various impressive buildings, it's the heart of Karlskrona's UNESCO World Heritage site and a perfect place to people-watch or enjoy a coffee.
Tip: Notice the statue of King Karl XI, the city's founder, in the center of the square. During summer, it often hosts outdoor events.
Experience Karlskrona's unique island setting by taking a boat tour of the archipelago. Various tour boats depart from the city center, offering scenic cruises around the numerous islands, providing different perspectives of the naval city and its beautiful coastal environment.
Tip: Several companies offer different routes and durations. It's an excellent way to see the outer defenses, charming summer houses, and the natural beauty of the archipelago.
Stroll through Björkholmen, one of Karlskrona's oldest and most charming residential areas. This quaint district features small, brightly painted wooden houses, narrow streets, and a distinct maritime atmosphere. It was historically home to naval shipyard workers and fishermen.
Tip: This area offers a lovely contrast to the grand stone buildings of the city center and is perfect for a leisurely walk and photography.
Walk or cycle across the bridge to Stumholmen, a picturesque island connected to the city center. Besides the Marinmuseum, it's home to the fascinating Old Dry Docks (now part of the museum), historic naval buildings, and pleasant coastal paths.
Tip: The area around the old dry docks and the museum offers excellent views of the harbor and the cityscape. Look for the decommissioned ships and military structures.
