Two crescent bays, one castle‑crowned hill, and water so clear it barely looks real — Kapsali is the postcard Kythira keeps for itself.

Overview
Kapsali sits on Kythira's southern coast, on the island the ancients called the birthplace of Aphrodite — legend says she rose from the sea foam just off these shores. The village curls around two crescent-shaped bays, split by a rocky peninsula with a lighthouse, while high above, the Venetian castle of Chora keeps its centuries-old watch. White-washed houses, blue-domed chapels, and a waterfront of tavernas and cafés give Kapsali the easy rhythm of a harbor that has welcomed sailors since Venetian galleys anchored here.
On a port call you tender ashore straight into the heart of the village — no buses, no queues, just the sea and the smell of grilled octopus. Swim off the pebble-and-sand beaches, stroll the promenade with a frappé, climb the winding path to the castle for the island's finest panorama, then claim a table at a waterfront taverna for just-caught fish and a glass of local wine. With more time, a boat trip to Chytra's sea cave or the waterfalls of Mylopotamos turns a beach day into a proper island adventure.
Two crescent-shaped bays curve around a lighthouse-topped peninsula — one lively with cafés and sunbeds, the other calm and quiet. The swimming is superb, with water so transparent you can count the pebbles on the seabed.
Tip: Claim a sunbed on the livelier bay in the morning, then drift to the quieter bay for a crowd-free afternoon swim.
Crowning the hill directly above the village, this Venetian-era fortress has stood guard over Kapsali for centuries. Inside the walls you'll find old churches and ramparts with sweeping views over the twin bays and the open sea.
Tip: Climb in the early morning or late afternoon — the light on the old stone is golden and the walk up is cooler.
Just offshore, the rocky islet of Chytra hides a great sea cave on its western flank. Local boats run trips out in the afternoon, when the sun angles into the cavern and the water glows in shifting blues and greens.
Tip: Book the boat trip from the Kapsali waterfront and bring a diving mask — the cave is best seen from the water.
Kapsali's long seaside promenade is the island's social heart — a string of tavernas, cafés, and bars facing the water. Come for grilled octopus and just-caught fish; stay for a Fatourada, the cinnamon-and-clove liqueur Kythira is known for.
Tip: Order the catch of the day with Paximadia, the island's twice-baked barley rusks — the classic Kapsali lunch.
A pocket-sized cove tucked just around the headland from Kapsali, reachable by rented pedal boat or a confident swim. Few visitors make the effort, so you'll often share its glass-clear water with hardly anyone.
Tip: Rent a pedal boat from the main beach in the morning, before the afternoon breeze picks up.
A short drive inland at Mylopotamos, Kythira's only show cave holds giant stalactites and stalagmites, a tiny chapel built in 1875, and 13th-century frescoes at its entrance. Pair it with the village's waterfalls for a half-day inland escape.
Tip: Check opening times locally before you go — access can be seasonal and the cave occasionally closes for maintenance.
