Overview
Kapisillit is a small, traditional Inuit settlement located deep within the vast and stunning Nuuk Fjord (Kangerlussuaq Fjord) system in Sermersooq Municipality, Greenland. Situated approximately 75 kilometers (47 miles) northeast of Greenland's capital, Nuuk, Kapisillit is one of the very few inhabited places far into the fjord, offering an authentic glimpse into the daily lives of Greenlanders who maintain a strong connection to hunting, fishing, and their natural environment.
The name "Kapisillit" means "the salmon place" in Greenlandic, reflecting its historical importance as an area where Arctic char (a salmonid fish) are abundant. Surrounded by dramatic towering mountains, glaciers, and a pristine wilderness, Kapisillit is a tranquil and isolated outpost, primarily accessible by boat. It serves as a popular destination for those seeking to experience Greenland's remote beauty, observe traditional lifestyles, and enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and fishing in an untouched Arctic landscape.
Immerse yourself in the quiet rhythms of traditional Greenlandic village life. Wander through the small settlement, admire the brightly colored houses, and observe the daily activities of the approximately 50-70 residents, who largely subsist on hunting and fishing. It's a chance to see a way of life deeply connected to the Arctic environment.
Tip: Be respectful of local privacy. A simple nod or "Ullaakkut" (good morning) can open doors to friendly interactions.
While not directly in Kapisillit, many boat tours to Kapisillit from Nuuk also include a stop where you can hike towards the edge of the vast Greenland Ice Sheet. This offers a rare opportunity to see the immense ice cap up close, feel its scale, and appreciate the raw power of nature.
Tip: Wear sturdy hiking boots and warm layers, even in summer. The terrain can be uneven. Always stay on marked paths and follow guide instructions.
Given its name, Kapisillit is an ideal place to try fishing for Arctic char. Locals often fish here, and guided tours (from Nuuk) sometimes include opportunities for visitors to try their hand at fishing in the fjord or local rivers, especially during the char run season.
Tip: Fishing licenses are usually required; check with your tour operator. This is a seasonal activity, typically best in late summer.
The journey to Kapisillit itself is a major highlight. Enjoy the scenic boat trip through the Nuuk Fjord system, one of the largest in the world. Marvel at the towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and occasional icebergs that calve from the distant glaciers.
Tip: Bring warm, windproof layers, as it can get very cold on the water, even on sunny days. Binoculars are great for spotting wildlife or distant features.
Keep an eye out for Arctic wildlife both in the fjord and on land. You might spot seals, various seabirds (like gulls and fulmars), and if very lucky, reindeer or Arctic hares on the surrounding slopes. In the water, look for porpoises or even whales.
Tip: Patience is key for wildlife viewing. Your boat captain or guide will often point out sightings.
Take a moment to visit the small local church and school in Kapisillit. These community buildings provide insight into the social fabric of this isolated settlement and its efforts to maintain its culture and provide education for its youth.
Tip: Be mindful that these are active community spaces, not always tourist attractions. Respect local activities and privacy.
