Taiwan’s vibrant southern port city.

4.9/5 ⭐Google 600+ Reviews | A+ Better Business Bureau

Overview
Kaohsiung, located in southern Taiwan, is the island nation's second-largest city and a vibrant port city renowned for its modern urban landscape, expansive harbor, and burgeoning art and cultural scene. Once primarily an industrial center, Kaohsiung has undergone a remarkable transformation, revitalizing its waterfront areas and developing a reputation for its innovative architecture, green spaces, and a relaxed, sunny disposition that contrasts with the bustling energy of Taipei.
The city is a fascinating blend of traditional temples and cutting-edge art installations, bustling night markets, and serene natural escapes. Its excellent public transportation, including a modern MRT system and light rail, makes it easy for visitors to explore its diverse attractions, from the spiritual tranquility of Buddhist monasteries to the artistic vibrancy of converted warehouse districts and the natural beauty of offshore islands. Kaohsiung offers a compelling mix of experiences, making it an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international travelers.
Visit Lotus Pond, a large artificial lake in the Zuoying District, famous for its numerous temples and pavilions. The most iconic are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, which you enter through the dragon's mouth and exit through the tiger's for good luck. Also, see the Spring and Autumn Pavilions and the towering Pei Chi Pavilion.
Tip: Go in the morning for cooler weather and fewer crowds. The area is easily accessible by bus from Zuoying HSR Station.
Discover the vibrant Pier-2 Art Center, a former industrial area transformed into a sprawling hub for contemporary art. Old warehouses and shipping containers have been repurposed into galleries, studios, and shops, featuring colorful murals, quirky sculptures, and pop-up markets. It's a fantastic spot for a leisurely stroll and photo opportunities.
Tip: Rent a YouBike (public bicycle) to explore the vast complex efficiently. Check for weekend markets or special exhibitions.
Hop on a short and scenic ferry ride from Gushan Ferry Pier to Cijin Island (Qijin Island). This charming island offers black sand beaches, a historic fort (Cihou Fort), the beautiful Cihou Lighthouse, a bustling Old Street with fresh seafood restaurants, and unique attractions like the Rainbow Church and Cihou Star Tunnel.
Tip: Rent a bicycle or electric scooter on the island to explore at your own pace. Enjoy a fresh seafood meal at one of the many restaurants near the ferry terminal.
Descend into Formosa Boulevard Station, one of the world's most beautiful subway stations. Its centerpiece is the Dome of Light, the largest glass artwork in the world, featuring a stunning array of colored glass panels that depict the story of human life. It's truly a sight to behold.
Tip: Even if you're not taking the MRT, it's worth a quick stop just to admire this magnificent art installation. There are often light shows at specific times.
Savor Kaohsiung's famous street food at one of its lively night markets. Liuhe Night Market (Liuhe Tourist Night Market) is very popular, especially for seafood, while Ruifeng Night Market offers a more local experience with a wider variety of stalls, including food, games, and clothes.
Tip: Go with an empty stomach and an open mind! Try local specialties like seafood congee, papaya milk, oyster omelets, and braised pork rice.
Take a half-day trip to the magnificent Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, one of Taiwan's most significant Buddhist centers. This expansive complex features an enormous sitting Buddha statue, eight towering pagodas lining the "Way to Buddhahood," and impressive exhibition halls showcasing Buddhist art and culture.
Tip: It's a short bus ride from Zuoying HSR Station. Allow at least 3-4 hours to explore the grounds and main museum thoroughly. Dress respectfully.
