Overview
The Kanmon Straits, also known as the Straits of Shimonoseki, is a narrow and historically significant body of water separating Honshu and Kyushu, two of Japan's four main islands. On the Honshu side lies Shimonoseki (Yamaguchi Prefecture), and on the Kyushu side is Kitakyushu (Fukuoka Prefecture), with its charming Mojiko district. This strategically vital strait connects the Sea of Japan with the Seto Inland Sea and has played a crucial role in Japanese maritime history, witnessing numerous battles and serving as a major artery for trade and transportation for centuries.
Today, the Kanmon Straits are a fascinating blend of historical significance, modern engineering, and vibrant local culture. Travelers can not only admire the bustling maritime traffic but also physically cross between Japan's main islands through an astonishing array of tunnels, a bridge, and ferries. The two cities facing each other across the strait offer a wealth of attractions, making the Kanmon Straits area a unique and rewarding destination.
Experience the unique thrill of walking between Honshu and Kyushu beneath the sea via the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel. This 780-meter-long tunnel takes about 15-20 minutes to walk and is a fascinating engineering feat. You'll even find a marked line in the middle, indicating the border between Yamaguchi and Fukuoka Prefectures.
Tip: Pedestrian entry is free, and bicycles/motorbikes pay a small toll (they must be pushed). Look for the commemorative stamps at both entrances to get half a stamp on each side, completing it when you cross!
On the Kyushu side, delve into the nostalgic charm of Mojiko Retro. This historic port district boasts beautifully preserved Western-style buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting its past as a prosperous international trade hub. Visit Mojiko Station, the Old Moji Customs Building, and the Old Mitsui OSK Line Building.
Tip: Take the Mojiko Retro Observation Deck for panoramic views of the entire Kanmon Straits. The area is particularly enchanting when illuminated at night.
Cross over to Shimonoseki (via ferry or tunnel) and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of Karato Market. This renowned seafood market is famous for its fresh catches, especially fugu (blowfish), a local specialty. On weekends and holidays, the market transforms into a "sushi street" where you can buy individual pieces of fresh sushi and seafood bowls.
Tip: Go hungry! This is an excellent place to sample incredibly fresh and affordable seafood. Arrive early on weekends to avoid the biggest crowds.
In Shimonoseki, visit Akama Shrine, known for its vibrant red gate and peaceful grounds. It's dedicated to the child-emperor Antoku, who drowned in the Battle of Dan-no-ura (a pivotal naval battle in the Kanmon Straits in 1185). Nearby is Mimosusogawa Park, where you can see replicas of cannons that were used during the Shimonoseki Campaign in the 1860s.
Tip: The park offers good views of the Kanmon Bridge and the strait. There's often someone dressed as a samurai or geisha for photo opportunities.
Gain a unique perspective of the Kanmon Straits by taking a pleasure cruise. These short boat trips offer fantastic views of the Kanmon Bridge, the bustling ship traffic, and key landmarks on both the Shimonoseki and Mojiko sides, including Ganryujima Island (famous for a legendary samurai duel).
Tip: Cruises typically depart from Mojiko Retro Pier or Karato Wharf. Check schedules, as they may be limited, especially outside peak season.
Learn about the rich history, culture, and nature of the Kanmon Straits at the Kanmon Kaikyo Museum in Mojiko Retro. This interactive museum features engaging exhibits, dioramas, and a large projection screen that brings the strait's past to life, from ancient battles to its role in modernization.
Tip: The museum's observation deck offers great views. It's a good starting point for understanding the significance of the area.
